Exciting New Partnership with Ohio State

By eNewsletter, Featured News, July 2024 Newsletter

LifeCare Alliance and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Center and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) announce a new partnership that will significantly enhance access to breast cancer screening and diagnostics for underserved individuals across Ohio.

A breast imaging team from the OSUCCC – James will begin providing breast cancer screening and diagnostic services at the LifeCare Alliance Cancer Screening and Support Center (formerly the Columbus Cancer Clinic).

Until now, LifeCare Alliance has provided cancer screening and diagnostic services independently, partnering with a number of medical and diagnostic professionals over the years – including Arthur G. James, MD, for whom The James is named and who served as medical director of the Columbus Cancer Clinic for more than 33 years. This new partnership with the OSUCCC – James centralizes and streamlines the breast cancer screening and follow-up process for the thousands of women served by LifeCare Alliance annually. Through this partnership, patients will have access to advanced screening mammography tools and an electronic medical record system for follow-up communication and care coordination.

“We see this partnership as a critical step for us in sustaining our 103-year commitment to cancer health equity,” said Charles W. Gehring, president & CEO of LifeCare Alliance. “This working relationship with the OSUCCC – James will significantly improve our ability to communicate with patients, provide referrals, share information with providers, and seamlessly help clients access the care they need following a cancer diagnosis.

“Access to follow-up care addresses one of the key social determinants in advancing cancer health equity. This partnership bridges the gap between diagnosis and treatment, and we couldn’t be more proud to be taking these next steps in the agency’s storied history of helping the community battle cancer.”

Century-long commitment to providing cancer care to underserved
LifeCare Alliance provides critical cancer screenings to an underserved population. In 2023, 60% of patients served had no insurance and 11% were covered under Medicaid. Nearly all (98%) of the 4,260 screening and diagnostic services performed were for women; 28% of those seen were African American; 52% were Hispanic.

“Regular cancer screenings have been proven to save lives, and we believe everyone should have access to these routine services regardless of whether or not they have insurance or the ability to meet co-pays,” said Gehring. “We anticipate that this partnership with The James will greatly increase our capacity to serve even more of our community’s most vulnerable members.”

Amy Kerger, DO, a breast radiologist and vice chair of ambulatory services and business development at the OSUCCC – James, said she hopes expansion of this long-standing community partnership will help increase awareness and break down barriers to breast health care for the underinsured and uninsured.

“By working together to understand the barriers to care patients face, we can make more meaningful strides toward reducing the burden of cancer for all people in our community,” said Kerger.

Updated treatment facility, electronic medical record access
Another patient advantage to the partnership is that LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services becomes an Epic Community Connect Partner with the OSUCCC – James. This means LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services is adopting the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system. This not only allows for seamless integration with the OSUCCC – James, but also makes it possible for every patient to have single-point access (MyChart) to a comprehensive medical record that can inform care across many providers. Ohio State and LifeCare Alliance have been working together for the last six months on installation, training, and utilization of the Epic EMR platform.

The LifeCare Alliance Cancer Screening and Support Center is further undergoing physical upgrades to improve the patient experience, including the addition of a new mammography reading room, clinician workspace, registration, waiting and comfort areas, installation of a new state-of-the-art Hologic mammography unit, and a new diagnostic ultrasound room.

“These upgrades are possible through generous donations to our recently completed capital campaign and through congressionally directed federal funding sponsored by Ohio Congresswoman Joyce Beatty,” reported Gehring.

He notes that this is truly a community-supported initiative and one that LifeCare Alliance believes is unique in the United States.

“To have a comprehensive cancer center partnering with a local free clinic to provide quality cancer screenings and access to care to anyone – regardless of their race, their immigration status, their gender identity, or their insurance status – is just one more thing Central Ohio can take pride in.”

The 1898 Society: Continuing Carrie’s Legacy

By eNewsletter, Featured News, June 2024 Newsletter

As we celebrate the 126th incorporation anniversary of LifeCare Alliance, we recognize the legacy created by Carrie Nelson Black and the 17 other women who formed the Instructive District Nursing Association (IDNA) in 1898. During a time when women were unable to vote, the group of passionate women saw the need for an organization providing care for the sick and under-resourced in the privacy of their homes. Thus, they created a lasting legacy painted in compassion, individual dignity, and grit.

One hundred twenty-six years later, we continue to commemorate what Carrie and her peers accomplished as we adapt to the ever-changing needs of today. As we continue to support our community through a myriad of services, we acknowledge that we would not be 126 years (and counting) strong without our donors and supporters!

Today, we celebrate our history, impact, and community, while planning for the future, and we are excited to introduce a new way to sustain LifeCare Alliance’s mission for the next 126 years –The 1898 Society!

You’re invited to increase your impact by joining the 1898 Society and giving any amount on a monthly basis. A suggested introductory gift of $18.98 (or more) per month would help deliver meals and regular wellness checks to an older adult for six weeks! Your contribution will truly serve as a reminder of how much Being There Matters™.

If you are already donating monthly, you have been grandfathered into The 1898 Society, becoming  its first members; more details will be mailed to you in the coming weeks.

We look forward to celebrating your increased impact with an event for 1898 Society members in the fall of 2024.

Answering the Call to Be There

By eNewsletter, Featured News, June 2024 Newsletter

Over the past four years, the need for our services has increased substantially, with demand for our home delivered meals hovering at 85% above pre-COVID levels. On top of that, our equipment has faced substantial wear and tear, as you can imagine, with it providing meals 365 days a year. Which is why, in 2021, we launched our Answering the Call capital campaign to raise $7 million to update machinery and increase our capacity to meet the community’s needs.

After three years of working behind the scenes to launch and secure funding, we are thrilled to announce that we have not only met but exceeded our goal with a total of $8 million!

We have our entire Alliance to be thankful for, including our board members, individual donors, employees, and community, corporate, and government partners. We extend a huge thank you to all who helped us surpass our goal!

We have already begun making the necessary updates to our Meals-on-Wheels operations, including ordering new ovens, a production line, and vans (which you can see driving around with our new branding). Over the next few years, we will continue to make updates such as replacing several hoods and fire suppression systems to ensure kitchen safety; creating a covered walkway for clients entering our Mound Street location; purchasing generators to secure operations and food safety during power outages; updating our Cancer Screening and Support Center to better the client experience; and more.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates about the progress here at LifeCare Alliance! As always, your support allows us to continue helping people live with more hope, security, and independence.

By eNewsletter, June 2024 Newsletter

As you may know, LifeCare Alliance has an array of Nutrition, Health, and Support services. One of the support programs provided by LifeCare Alliance is Camp Hamwi, a haven for children and teens with diabetes to learn and grow in a supportive environment. Camp Hamwi provides a unique opportunity for youths to connect with peers who share similar experiences and challenges while still enjoying the summer camp experience. For the past 58 years, Camp Hamwi has hosted hundreds of children each summer.

For some of our campers, cost can be a barrier to attending. But by running in the Dash for Camp, you can help our campers experience all that camp has to offer. Dedicated to supporting Camp Hamwi, The Dash for Camp 5K walk/run is a great way to gather a group of friends, family, and community members together to enjoy a day outside and support a good cause.

The Dash for Camp will take place on Saturday, November 9 at Merchant Park/Heritage Rail Trail in Hilliard. The 5K kicks off at 9:30 am, but participants can arrive early for packet pickup and refreshments.

If you have any questions regarding how to get involved with Camp Hamwi or The Dash for Camp, please contact Danielle Visconti at dvisconti@lifecarealliance.org.

Helping Central Ohio Beat the Heat

By eNewsletter, June 2024 Newsletter

At LifeCare Alliance, we have been committed to recognizing and meeting the needs of our clients and the Central Ohio community for over a century. In recent years, we have noticed a concerning trend. Individuals who are homebound due to aging, a medical condition, or disability are at a higher risk of experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

To address these concerns, we launched the Beat the Heat Fan Campaign over 20 years ago. Throughout the summer and into the fall, LifeCare Alliance collects and distributes over 2,000 box fans to our clients and residents of Franklin County to help people live with more security and self-reliance. For the past two decades, we’ve been fortunate to have an Alliance of dedicated volunteers, supporters, and partners help drive the campaign’s success.

The Beat the Heat Fan Campaign continually welcomes donations of boxed fans during the summer. New fans in their boxes can be dropped off at LifeCare Alliance or at a local fire station, where they serve as drop sites for the community.

If you are interested in getting involved, or have any questions about the Beat the Heat Fan Campaign, please contact Anne Peters at apeters@lifecarealliance.org.

5 Ways to Be There for Older Americans

By eNewsletter, May 2024 eNewsletter

In 2024, there are more older Americans than ever, making up nearly 18% of the country’s population. But with this spike comes the question, how can we support them?

According to Molly Haroz, the Director of Nutrition Programs at LifeCare Alliance, there are many simple steps we can take. In her line of work, she organizes programs such as Meals-on-Wheels and Senior Dining Centers that help aging adults maintain their dignity and independence. After working in this field for over 15 years, Haroz has insightful suggestions on how to support your aging family and community members.

  1. Check in with the older adults in your life. While this may seem like a small task, it can prove to be critical. A 2023 study found that social isolation is associated with a 1.28 percent higher risk of dementia. So take a moment out of your day to call your grandma, check in with your neighbor, or volunteer with older adults.
  2. Have critical conversations about planning. Haroz says that one of the most impactful things individuals can do this Older Americans Month is creating a solid plan with their loved ones. She suggests discussing options for different life scenarios so that if a crisis does come up, you are ready.
  3. Look into community resources. To avoid the high cost of nursing homes, Haroz recommends looking into community resources ahead of time. “I think a lot of times people don’t even know what’s available to them,” says Haroz. But these resources are so helpful. When someone is needing help, congregate meals would be your step one, and then if that is not accessible, step two would be home delivered meals.”
  4. Rearrange or modify the living space. If a person wants to stay in their own living space, it should be suited for their needs. Haroz points out that, through LifeCare Alliance, clients can have an occupational therapist assess their home’s layout and rearrange it to reduce the risk of falls.
  5. Spread awareness. With the increasing older American population, Haroz emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about aging and the resources for it. “This month we should not only celebrate older adults, but also begin to develop a plan for them.”

Powered by Connection: The Impact of Senior Dining Centers

By eNewsletter, May 2024 eNewsletter

This year’s theme for Older Americans Month (OAM) is “Powered by Connection,” highlighting the positive impact connectivity has on the well-being and health of aging adults. In the wake of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Connectivity, this topic is more relevant than ever.

Nan Davis, the Dining Center Coordinator for Carrie’s Café at LifeCare Alliance, believes this is a powerful theme for OAM. As an older American herself who works with this population on a daily basis, Davis has a unique perspective on this topic.

“We need places like Carrie’s Café,” she says. “Because in here, people are amongst other folks that are going through the same thing. We have a lot to offer each other.”

Congregate dining centers like Carrie’s Café are one of the best ways for older adults to find connection with one another. Not only do these centers provide a nutritious, home-style meal, but they also offer the chance to meet new people, nurture friendships, and build a support network.

“People feel like they belong here,” says Davis. “We can count on each other.”

At Carrie’s Café, anyone over 60 can enjoy a hot lunch for a suggested donation of $1.50 every week day. “And if they can’t afford that, we don’t turn anyone away,” Davis points out. The café also hosts bingo, crafting activities, and social events.

“Carrie’s is a wonderful place for older adults to connect and make new friends,” says Davis. “It’s a place where people can come in, have a good time, and not worry about what’s going on outside these walls. In here, we’re safe; we’re with friends.”

On any given week day, Carrie’s is filled with friends eating, conversing, and connecting. For many of our clients, this is their only support network. Not only does this connection provide a social outlet, but it is also linked to better mental and physical health.

To see firsthand the power of connection, volunteer at Carrie’s Café in honor of Older Americans Month. You can work in the kitchen, help set up fashion shows and holiday parties, lead bingo, teach crafts, DJ, and more. Get started today by heading to lifecarealliance.org/volunteer.

Why We Celebrate Older Americans Month

By eNewsletter, May 2024 eNewsletter

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens declared May as Senior Citizens Month to draw awareness to relevant issues of the time. The country lacked effective resources for healthy aging, with only 17 million Americans living past the age of 65, compared to the 55 million today. Plus, one in three older Americans lived in poverty, a staggering number.

Two years later, President Kennedy renamed it Older Americans Month, and it has remained a national month of recognition to this day with every president since honoring it in a formal proclamation.

Each May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the country in celebrations, encouraging community members to host ceremonies, events, fairs, speaking engagements, and other activities that honor and uplift older Americans.

Older Americans are the backbone of our nation and our communities. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. But with an increase in isolation and loneliness amongst older adults, many feel left out or underappreciated. LifeCare Alliance works to ensure that they feel seen and that they are treated with dignity and respect.

This month, we invite you to Join the Alliance to support older Americans. You can serve them at Carrie’s Café by leading an event, deliver a hot meal route, donate, and more. When we collectively contribute our time, talents, and treasures, we can make a tremendous impact.

ACL Research Project Update

By eNewsletter, Featured News, May 2024 eNewsletter

About two years ago, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) awarded LifeCare Alliance nearly $3 million for a five-year Innovations in Nutrition Programs and Services Grant. While we at LifeCare Alliance have already seen the impact of our services in action, this grant will allow us to create an evidence-based model to prove that combining home delivered meals with the services of a registered dietitian and occupational therapist can help older adults remain independent and living in their own homes longer.

This year, we will be wrapping up the pilot of the study and begin moving into the first wave of research. The ultimate goal of this grant is to create a replicable model that can be used across the nation by home delivered meals providers, resource agencies, and other organizations that help people age in place. Once again, LifeCare Alliance is leading the way in creating a world in which people can live on their own terms with dignity and independence.

*This project was supported, in part by grant number 90INNU0044, from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. Grantees undertaking projects with government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions. Points of view or opinions do not, therefore, necessarily represent official ACL policy.

Celebrating National Volunteer Month

By April 2024 eNewsletter, eNewsletter

In a 1993 speech, President George H.W. Bush spoke about volunteerism, encouraging people to participate in activism and hands-on involvement. He described volunteers as “ordinary people who reach beyond themselves to touch the lives of those in need, bringing hope and opportunity, care, and friendship.”  This is the essence of Being There Matters™. And our over 7,800 volunteers embody this every day!

From delivering meals 365 days a year to serving seniors at our dining centers, and from supporting cancer clients in their treatment to teaching youths how to handle their diabetes, the volunteers of LifeCare Alliance are MORE than a volunteer!  They are the lifeline to many of our services. We could not do what we do and take all clients without a waiting list without our volunteers.

While we are thankful every month, April is National Volunteer Month, and we take this time to recognize our volunteers. If you volunteer with us any amount, we invite you to celebrate with us at one of our volunteer appreciation events. As a vital part of LifeCare Alliance, we want to thank you for all you do.

We hope to see you at one of our annual volunteer appreciation events.  Please click here to RSVP so we can plan for your attendance.

A volunteer woman sorting pet food

As we celebrate the invaluable contributions of our volunteers, we’re delighted to spotlight two remarkable individuals who have been pillars of support for LifeCare Alliance. Mother and daughter Barb and Carol MacIvor have volunteered for many years with LifeCare Alliance, enriching the lives of countless individuals and their pets in need. While volunteering with Senior Pet Care services, Barb and Carol have filled more than 24,000 bags of cat and dog food. This equates to more than 140,000 pounds of pet food and approximately 280,000 pet meals.

Both Barb and Carol have been integral parts of LifeCare Alliance. Barb’s steadfast dedication spans a remarkable eight years, while Carol has selflessly volunteered for 10 years, exemplifying unwavering commitment and compassion.

Barb’s journey with volunteering traces back to her childhood, where she was deeply influenced by her own mother, a social worker. Witnessing her mother’s commitment to serving communities in need left a permanent impact on Barb. Inspired by her mother’s example, Barb embarked on her own volunteering journey, seeking out opportunities to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

For Carol, she began volunteering during her tenure at Hexion, where she and her colleagues delivered Meals-on-Wheels and assisted in the LifeCare Alliance kitchen. Learning about LifeCare Alliance’s mission resonated deeply with Carol, who saw an opportunity not only to contribute to the community but to do so with her mother.  Together they continue a family legacy of engaging in meaningful activities that benefit others.

Reflecting on their initial impressions of LifeCare Alliance, Barb was struck by the organization’s vast reach and the breadth of services it provides to those in need. Carol, on the other hand, was captivated by the opportunity to not only help others but also to foster a sense of purpose and fulfillment in her mother’s life.

When asked what advice they would offer to prospective volunteers, Carol emphasizes the abundance of opportunities available, encouraging others to explore the myriad ways they can make a difference. Barb echoes this sentiment, asserting that once you start volunteering, you’ll find yourself drawn to the enriching experiences and the profound impact you can have on others’ lives.

As we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Barb, Carol, and all our dedicated volunteers, we invite you to join us in celebrating Barb and Carol’s unwavering commitment to serving others and making our community a better place, where Being There Matters™.

Local Elected Officials Serve with March for Meals

By April 2024 eNewsletter, eNewsletter

This year’s annual March for Meals event was held the week of March 18-22, 2024. Several local elected officials from three different counties shared an hour or two of their time by delivering Meals-on-Wheels or preparing meals in our kitchen. This gave them a hands-on opportunity to connect with constituents served by LifeCare Alliance, while also raising awareness for senior hunger and isolation.

Mayor Patrick J. Closser and Meals-on-Wheels Client

When asked about the importance of delivering meals, here’s what a few had to say:

City of London, Ohio’s Mayor Patrick J. Closser said, “I’m proud to be a LifeCare Alliance Meals-on-Wheels supporter, alongside the many dedicated volunteers who nourish our community’s most vulnerable residents.  It’s a wonderful program that delivers both healthy meals and a friendly check-in, ensuring no one goes hungry or feels alone.”

State representative Beryl Brown Piccolantonio and Meals-on-Wheels client

Representative Beryl Brown Piccolantonio shared on her Instagram page, “My route took only an hour and totally doable on my lunch hour. Meal delivery is critical for those with temporary need or to help older individuals age in their homes.”

Representative Allison Russo said, “I’ve been a longtime supporter and volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels, and it was great to be out today delivering meals to clients again. Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who show up every week to deliver critical nutrition to our most vulnerable residents and who make this program a success!”

LifeCare Alliance is proud to have you as part of our Alliance and it’s with a heartfelt “Thank You” that we recognize this year’s March for Meals participants:

A woman receiving a meal from a volunteer

Do you ever wonder why we request that Meals-on-Wheels volunteers follow specific protocols and procedures? It’s because, in addition to delivering nutritious meals, volunteers provide a critical wellness check to ensure our clients’ safety and well-being.

Through these four steps, our Alliance of associates and volunteers are able to look after all clients, restoring their sense of stability and self-reliance.

1.Obtaining Client Signatures and Time Stamps: We ask volunteers to obtain client signatures to validate that a client is doing well. Signatures are also required from our funders for our agency to receive meal reimbursements. Clients are aware that their signature is required to receive their meals. In the event that there is a client concern, the time stamp is important to verify at what time the client was doing okay.

2. Providing Meals Directly to Clients: Occasionally, clients may leave a note to place the meal outside. Our goal, however, is client safety and well-being. Please disregard client notes and only follow the instructions as listed on the delivery record. You should have direct contact with each client on the route unless otherwise noted on the delivery record. If a client does not answer the door, please scan the QR code, found on the orange pouch or on the clipboard, to inform our team that the client is not at home.  Make sure you also check “no” on the delivery record to indicate that the meal was not delivered.

3.  Providing Client Updates: We welcome and encourage you to be our “eyes and ears” and let us know about client concerns. Please alert us when you see any unusual behavior or changes. Give us a call or write notes on the delivery record if the client requests to receive other LifeCare Alliance services or to pause meal deliveries. Please remember NOT to provide any client identifiable information (name, address, etc) in an email as that is against HIPAA rules. If it’s necessary to provide direct client information, you may do so via a phone call or via a secured transmittal mechanism such as the QR Code on the orange pouch.

4.Emergency Procedures: In the event of an emergency, Being There Matters™. If a client has a medical emergency, call 911 and then also call our office so that we can notify the client’s emergency contact. We understand that it may seem helpful to move or assist a client, but, to prevent further injury, volunteers should NEVER move a client. For the care of the client, follow these procedures even if a client asks not to notify emergency services.

To join the Alliance and be there for the clients in our community, email volunteer@lifecarealliance.org.

A group standing outside a Lowe's holding fans

Our Beat the Heat Fan Campaign benefits Central Ohio’s most vulnerable residents during extreme heat emergencies. Last year, LifeCare Alliance collected and distributed more than 2,000 fans! We are still a ways out, but it is never too early to start planning a neighborhood, family, or work fan-drive to support our community.

Why donate a fan?

Older adults, those with medical challenges, and homebound individuals are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. A simple box fan can lower a room’s temperature by up to 10 degrees.

How to help

  • Purchase a new fan from your preferred retailer (or e-tailer!) and drop it off at your nearest Franklin County fire station. You may also drop it off at 670 Harmon Avenue, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Donated fans must be new; used fans cannot be accepted as they are considered a fire hazard.
  • Pick up fans from fire stations and deliver them to our facility at 670 Harmon Avenue.

More information on these volunteer opportunities as well as the LifeCare Alliance Beat the Heat Fan Campaign can be found at www.lifecarealliance.org/fans.

At its inception, attendees joined the agency for breakfast, a keynote speaker, and a tour, then ended their day with a hands-on service opportunity delivering Meals-on-Wheels. Local legends Cameron Mitchell, Alex Shumate, and Tami Longaberger all served as keynote speakers.

The event has transformed through the years, ultimately landing on what we know it to be today: Big Wheels, a gala-style fundraiser. As our foremost event of the year, Big Wheels raised over half a million dollars in 2023!

Thanks to the sponsors and in-kind donors, to the hundreds of guests, and to the thousands of moments being there for our clients, Big Wheels’ continued success empowers us to keep serving all our neighbors in need of a warm meal and compassionate support.

Our dedicated events team, consisting of staff and committee volunteers, is gearing up for our 2024 Big Wheels being held at our in-house event center, The Levee, and catered by L.A. Catering, our social enterprise, on Saturday, April 20th. If you’d like to learn more about the event click here: www.lifecarealliance.org/bigwheels/  For more information on sponsorship opportunities or in-kind donations, please reach out to Danielle Visconti at dvisconti@lifecarealliance.org or 614-437-2947.

Together We Have The Power To Do Even More!

By eNewsletter, March 2024 eNewsletter

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

To Margaret Mead’s point, have you ever wondered what impact a group of dedicated supporters of our organization could accomplish together? Well, in 2023, our LifeCare Alliance Spirit Society members collectively gave roughly $1,293,000. For impact reference, if every penny of that went to our Meals-On-Wheels program only, the Spirit Society would have paid for just under 20 percent of our yearly meals delivered to our neighbors, parents, and friends who are in need of a warm meal and daily check-in.

Of course not every penny donated by Spirit Society members goes to a single program!  As a nationally recognized nonprofit, we offer services spanning Nutrition, Health and Support, all working together to restore a sense of stability and self-reliance to our clients. As put by a Spirit Society member: “LifeCare Alliance offers the best range of services to a wide circle of individuals, doing so in a well-managed and economically sustainable method.”

It’s important to us that you know your money is going to an enterprising and resourceful organization. That’s why Spirit Society members are invited to exclusive events twice a year and receive quarterly updates from our President & CEO, Chuck Gehring. That way we keep you informed of how you are making an impact in your community!

To join the Spirit Society, you simply donate $1,000 or more each year. That’s only $83.34 each month! If you’d like to “set it and forget it”, you can establish a recurring monthly donation by visiting www.lifecarealliance.org/donate.

Volunteering—Good For You!

By eNewsletter, February 2024 eNewsletter

It’s a given that when you volunteer you are helping someone else with something they cannot do for themselves. But have you ever given any thought to what volunteering can mean for you, for your health and well-being? Experts cite that volunteering helps you stay physically active, combats depression, and creates a sense of purpose.  One study from the University of Exeter even found that individuals who regularly volunteer have mortality rates reduced by as much as 22 percent.

But we don’t have to rely on experts from Exeter; LifeCare Alliance volunteers share with us every day the benefits they get from volunteering.  As a matter of fact, 87 percent of volunteers recently surveyed said they would recommend volunteering with LifeCare Alliance to a friend or coworker.

And, if you need any more evidence, consider what they shared with us about their experiences:

“I love the clients, and I have fallen in love with this program. The clients have become my friends.”

“Delivering Meals-on-Wheels is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for families. We are together in our car, can take turns delivering, and the kids can directly see the people they are helping and the impact they are having.”

“Delivering meals helps me realize how lucky I am that I can help those in need.  I’ve met so many wonderful people on my route. Thank you for this opportunity!”

Will you be the next person to Join the Alliance and begin reaping these rewards? Email volunteer@lifecarealliance.org to get started today.

Volunteer Spotlight: The Brotherhood of Congregation Beth Tikvah

By eNewsletter, February 2024 eNewsletter

A group of volunteers

The brotherhood of Congregation Beth Tikvah in Worthington truly exemplifies the LifeCare Alliance tagline: Being There Matters™!  For the past 20 years, they have delivered Meals-on-Wheels on or around the Christmas holiday. As members of a Jewish synagogue – which does not observe Christmas – they like to relieve regularly scheduled volunteers so that they may have the holiday off to spend with their families and friends.

The group makes a whole day out of volunteering. They begin their day at a local establishment, catching up over breakfast. They then arrive at our Harmon location around 10 am where their leader, David Binkovitz, provides training and quick tips. Pairing up, the team members are assigned their routes before going out to deliver hot and nutritious meals to hundreds of Meals-on-Wheels clients.

Jeff Wasserstrom has been volunteering since 2004. His son joined him in 2009, back when he was just 11 years old.  The two have turned this into their own father-son bonding tradition, serving the community together every year since.

The brotherhood has delivered meals to close to 1,500 clients since they began in 2003, and they’ve helped hundreds of regular volunteers be able to spend the holidays with their loved . We sincerely thank them for their dedication and commitment over the past 20 years, and we look forward to their next 20 years of support.

If your group would like to get involved and start your own annual tradition, please reach out to Volunteer@lifecarealliance.org.

2. Senior Pet Care Route –If you love pets, this program is for you. Often, our clients have to choose between feeding themselves and their pets. That’s why we provide free pet food for qualifying clients. Sign up to make some pups and kitties happy and healthy by delivering their food! Deliveries are scheduled monthly and are flexible to work around your availability.

3. DJ-ing  –Do you have DJ skills and want to spin some tunes at Carrie’s Café for one of our lunchtime dance parties?

6. Holiday Adopt-A-Client donations – Have any leftover gifts from the holidays lying around the house that you don’t know how to put to use? It’s not too early to regift them to our Holiday Adopt-a-Client program! You can donate gifts you won’t use, gift cards, knitted or crocheted items, excess blankets, and more.

7.-10. Use Your Imagination—There’s no limit to the joy and enrichment you can bring to a client’s life. Have a way you’d like to contribute? We’d love to hear your ideas!

LifeCare Alliance Corporate and Community in Being There Matters t-shirts

You may often hear from our Corporate & Community Engagement Team members, but you may not have faces to go with their names. These are the associates who reach out to you about your volunteer experience, train you, and schedule your shifts. They oversee volunteer relationships for LifeCare Alliance, in-kind product donations, and our Senior Pet Care services. Next time you see one of them in the hallways or at an event, please say “hi” – they’d love to put your face to your name too!

First row

Nicole Envid, Community Engagement Manager, nenvid@lifecarealliance.org

You may hear from Nicole if you volunteer as an individual, church, school, or small group. She’s responsible for training and recruiting small volunteer groups. Nicole enjoys connecting with new volunteers and finding ways for them to partner with LifeCare Alliance.

Nicole hails from the small state of Delaware, and she relocated to Columbus when she married her husband Jeremy in 2017. She’s a huge Philly sports fan, has six step kids, two cats, a dog, and a tortoise. She also spends her time working on her small business fair trade company, which partners with artisans in 16 countries to create beautiful and useful products and sustainable jobs.

Second row (L to R)

Curt Vance, PhD, Senior Pet Care Coordinator, cvance@lifecarealliance.org

You may have heard from Curt if you’ve ever delivered a pet care route. As the Senior Pet Care Coordinator, Curt manages the day-to-day activities of senior pet care services. This includes training and scheduling volunteer groups, coordinating pet food delivery, and providing veterinary financial assistance for our clients’ pets.

Curt lives in Westerville with his wife Kelly. He has two sons who attend The Ohio State University. While not working, Curt enjoys playing guitar and ukulele, as well as bird watching.

Claire Eastman, Chief Corporate & Community Engagement Officer, ceastman@lifecarealliance.org

Claire is the Chief Corporate and Community Engagement Officer at LifeCare Alliance.  You may run into her at outreach events, public speaking engagements, or around LifeCare Alliance. She is responsible for managing the recruitment, training, and retention of over 7,800 annual LifeCare Alliance volunteers.  Claire also oversees the intake, pick-up, and placement of in-kind donations to the Alliance as well as our signature Senior Pet Care program.

Claire likes to say that her job is not her occupation but rather her “occupassion”.  Claire lives in Westerville with her husband of 10 years, Chris.  Between them, they have five kids ranging in age from a college freshman to a college senior.  Claire loves to read, travel, and spend time with her family.

Third Row (L to R)

Ghadir Amin, Meals-on-Wheels Engagement Coordinator, gamin@lifecarealliance.org

Ghadir is the face of the Corporate & Community Engagement team at Harmon Avenue, welcoming new groups, providing orientation and training, and directing volunteers to their assignments. You have most likely run into her if you’ve picked up home delivered meals from Harmon.

Originally from Iraq, Ghadir immigrated to the United States as a child. In 2021, she found her calling at LifeCare Alliance. Ghadir finds immense joy in working with volunteers and seeing the collective power of a united community. Beyond the busy schedule, Ghadir’s heart lies in her love for planting and nurturing life and with her two spoiled cats.

Stephanie Sparrow Hughes, Community Engagement Manager, shughes@lifecarealliance.org

If you’ve ever volunteered with a large work team, chances are, you’ve met Stephanie. As a Community Engagement Manager, Stephanie is our contact person for corporations who want to give back to their community. She enjoys promoting the LifeCare Alliance mission by speaking at company and community events and expanding outreach for all people to give back and serve those in need.

In her free time, Stephanie speaks to community groups about preserving diverse narratives and serves on the board for the Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society. She and her husband Martin love to travel and enjoy nature walks. As a sun baby, one of her favorite things to do is to soak up some rays.

Anne Peters, In-Kind Donation Coordinator, apeters@lifecarealliance.org

If you’ve ever donated a gift-in-kind, you’ve probably met Anne. As the In-Kind Coordinator, Anne is responsible for managing and disbursing the in-kind product donations across the agency.  She had the pleasure of heading the Holiday Adopt a Client program this year, providing gift bags to nearly a thousand clients and family members over the holidays.  So, if you donated to or participated in the program, you have likely received emails or calls from Anne.

Aside from a passion for nonprofit work, Anne loves to garden, read books, and cook. Over the past decade, Anne has been involved with various nonprofits, including volunteering with Peace Corps Tanzania. She is committed to serving the community she loves with compassion and empathy.

The One and Only LifeCare Alliance

By eNewsletter, January 2024 Newsletter

For more than two decades, LifeCare Alliance has had a powerful tagline: Nourishing the Human Spirit. And while that tagline is still very relevant to what we do, and the philosophy under which we operate, we found we needed something that was more encompassing of all our services. With the help of our branding firm, the incredible FORT, we were able to identify and articulate what sets us apart—and makes us the one and only.

When you’re the only daily provider of home delivered, hot meals —being there matters! When you’re the only free cancer clinic operating in the state—being there matters! When you’re the only dedicated diabetes camp for youth and teens in central Ohio—being there matters! Whenever someone feels isolated, frightened, or limited, being there matters! Being There Matters™!

Being There Matters

By eNewsletter, January 2024 Newsletter

As a volunteer, you are a valued member of the Alliance. You know firsthand the impact of being there to our clients when you deliver a meal, a friendly smile, and that all-important wellness check-in.

Your impact also helps ensure that LifeCare Alliance can continue serving nearly 30,000 clients each year without a waiting list and regardless of their ability to pay. When you deliver a meal route, you help us stretch every dollar so that we may continue serving everyone who qualifies for, and benefits from, our services.

We welcome your volunteer support whether you deliver once a week, once a month, or once a year!

Help-at-Home Aide Honored for Saving a Life

By eNewsletter, January 2024 Newsletter

In December, our associate, Sheryl Horton, knocked on a client’s door for her weekly home care services. When the client didn’t respond, Sheryl took action. She called the client multiple times and got no response. She then contacted the proper authorities and was able to get the client life-saving services. Franklin County Senior Options awarded Sheryl an Exemplary Certificate of Service in recognition of her quick, and life-saving action in an emergency situation.

Aides like Sheryl know their clients well, allowing them to identify when things seem a little out of character. Stories like these prove that Being There Matters™. The aides that perform these services go above and beyond to deliver the best care possible, and they couldn’t do it without the support of our Alliance.
