5 Ways to Be There for Older Americans

By eNewsletter, May 2024 eNewsletter

In 2024, there are more older Americans than ever, making up nearly 18% of the country’s population. But with this spike comes the question, how can we support them?

According to Molly Haroz, the Director of Nutrition Programs at LifeCare Alliance, there are many simple steps we can take. In her line of work, she organizes programs such as Meals-on-Wheels and Senior Dining Centers that help aging adults maintain their dignity and independence. After working in this field for over 15 years, Haroz has insightful suggestions on how to support your aging family and community members.

  1. Check in with the older adults in your life. While this may seem like a small task, it can prove to be critical. A 2023 study found that social isolation is associated with a 1.28 percent higher risk of dementia. So take a moment out of your day to call your grandma, check in with your neighbor, or volunteer with older adults.
  2. Have critical conversations about planning. Haroz says that one of the most impactful things individuals can do this Older Americans Month is creating a solid plan with their loved ones. She suggests discussing options for different life scenarios so that if a crisis does come up, you are ready.
  3. Look into community resources. To avoid the high cost of nursing homes, Haroz recommends looking into community resources ahead of time. “I think a lot of times people don’t even know what’s available to them,” says Haroz. But these resources are so helpful. When someone is needing help, congregate meals would be your step one, and then if that is not accessible, step two would be home delivered meals.”
  4. Rearrange or modify the living space. If a person wants to stay in their own living space, it should be suited for their needs. Haroz points out that, through LifeCare Alliance, clients can have an occupational therapist assess their home’s layout and rearrange it to reduce the risk of falls.
  5. Spread awareness. With the increasing older American population, Haroz emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about aging and the resources for it. “This month we should not only celebrate older adults, but also begin to develop a plan for them.”

Powered by Connection: The Impact of Senior Dining Centers

By eNewsletter, May 2024 eNewsletter

This year’s theme for Older Americans Month (OAM) is “Powered by Connection,” highlighting the positive impact connectivity has on the well-being and health of aging adults. In the wake of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Connectivity, this topic is more relevant than ever.

Nan Davis, the Dining Center Coordinator for Carrie’s Café at LifeCare Alliance, believes this is a powerful theme for OAM. As an older American herself who works with this population on a daily basis, Davis has a unique perspective on this topic.

“We need places like Carrie’s Café,” she says. “Because in here, people are amongst other folks that are going through the same thing. We have a lot to offer each other.”

Congregate dining centers like Carrie’s Café are one of the best ways for older adults to find connection with one another. Not only do these centers provide a nutritious, home-style meal, but they also offer the chance to meet new people, nurture friendships, and build a support network.

“People feel like they belong here,” says Davis. “We can count on each other.”

At Carrie’s Café, anyone over 60 can enjoy a hot lunch for a suggested donation of $1.50 every week day. “And if they can’t afford that, we don’t turn anyone away,” Davis points out. The café also hosts bingo, crafting activities, and social events.

“Carrie’s is a wonderful place for older adults to connect and make new friends,” says Davis. “It’s a place where people can come in, have a good time, and not worry about what’s going on outside these walls. In here, we’re safe; we’re with friends.”

On any given week day, Carrie’s is filled with friends eating, conversing, and connecting. For many of our clients, this is their only support network. Not only does this connection provide a social outlet, but it is also linked to better mental and physical health.

To see firsthand the power of connection, volunteer at Carrie’s Café in honor of Older Americans Month. You can work in the kitchen, help set up fashion shows and holiday parties, lead bingo, teach crafts, DJ, and more. Get started today by heading to lifecarealliance.org/volunteer.

Why We Celebrate Older Americans Month

By eNewsletter, May 2024 eNewsletter

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens declared May as Senior Citizens Month to draw awareness to relevant issues of the time. The country lacked effective resources for healthy aging, with only 17 million Americans living past the age of 65, compared to the 55 million today. Plus, one in three older Americans lived in poverty, a staggering number.

Two years later, President Kennedy renamed it Older Americans Month, and it has remained a national month of recognition to this day with every president since honoring it in a formal proclamation.

Each May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the country in celebrations, encouraging community members to host ceremonies, events, fairs, speaking engagements, and other activities that honor and uplift older Americans.

Older Americans are the backbone of our nation and our communities. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. But with an increase in isolation and loneliness amongst older adults, many feel left out or underappreciated. LifeCare Alliance works to ensure that they feel seen and that they are treated with dignity and respect.

This month, we invite you to Join the Alliance to support older Americans. You can serve them at Carrie’s Café by leading an event, deliver a hot meal route, donate, and more. When we collectively contribute our time, talents, and treasures, we can make a tremendous impact.

ACL Research Project Update

By eNewsletter, Featured News, May 2024 eNewsletter

About two years ago, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) awarded LifeCare Alliance nearly $3 million for a five-year Innovations in Nutrition Programs and Services Grant. While we at LifeCare Alliance have already seen the impact of our services in action, this grant will allow us to create an evidence-based model to prove that combining home delivered meals with the services of a registered dietitian and occupational therapist can help older adults remain independent and living in their own homes longer.

This year, we will be wrapping up the pilot of the study and begin moving into the first wave of research. The ultimate goal of this grant is to create a replicable model that can be used across the nation by home delivered meals providers, resource agencies, and other organizations that help people age in place. Once again, LifeCare Alliance is leading the way in creating a world in which people can live on their own terms with dignity and independence.

*This project was supported, in part by grant number 90INNU0044, from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. Grantees undertaking projects with government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions.
