The 1898 Society: Continuing Carrie’s Legacy

By eNewsletter, Featured News, June 2024 Newsletter

As we celebrate the 126th incorporation anniversary of LifeCare Alliance, we recognize the legacy created by Carrie Nelson Black and the 17 other women who formed the Instructive District Nursing Association (IDNA) in 1898. During a time when women were unable to vote, the group of passionate women saw the need for an organization providing care for the sick and under-resourced in the privacy of their homes. Thus, they created a lasting legacy painted in compassion, individual dignity, and grit.

One hundred twenty-six years later, we continue to commemorate what Carrie and her peers accomplished as we adapt to the ever-changing needs of today. As we continue to support our community through a myriad of services, we acknowledge that we would not be 126 years (and counting) strong without our donors and supporters!

Today, we celebrate our history, impact, and community, while planning for the future, and we are excited to introduce a new way to sustain LifeCare Alliance’s mission for the next 126 years –The 1898 Society!

You’re invited to increase your impact by joining the 1898 Society and giving any amount on a monthly basis. A suggested introductory gift of $18.98 (or more) per month would help deliver meals and regular wellness checks to an older adult for six weeks! Your contribution will truly serve as a reminder of how much Being There Matters™.

If you are already donating monthly, you have been grandfathered into The 1898 Society, becoming  its first members; more details will be mailed to you in the coming weeks.

We look forward to celebrating your increased impact with an event for 1898 Society members in the fall of 2024.

If you have questions about The 1898 Society, please get in touch with Emily Armbrecht at earmbrecht@lifecarealliance.org or 614.437.2872. To join, go to this link today.

Answering the Call to Be There

By eNewsletter, Featured News, June 2024 Newsletter

Over the past four years, the need for our services has increased substantially, with demand for our home delivered meals hovering at 85% above pre-COVID levels. On top of that, our equipment has faced substantial wear and tear, as you can imagine, with it providing meals 365 days a year. Which is why, in 2021, we launched our Answering the Call capital campaign to raise $7 million to update machinery and increase our capacity to meet the community’s needs.

After three years of working behind the scenes to launch and secure funding, we are thrilled to announce that we have not only met but exceeded our goal with a total of $8 million!

We have our entire Alliance to be thankful for, including our board members, individual donors, employees, and community, corporate, and government partners. We extend a huge thank you to all who helped us surpass our goal!

We have already begun making the necessary updates to our Meals-on-Wheels operations, including ordering new ovens, a production line, and vans (which you can see driving around with our new branding). Over the next few years, we will continue to make updates such as replacing several hoods and fire suppression systems to ensure kitchen safety; creating a covered walkway for clients entering our Mound Street location; purchasing generators to secure operations and food safety during power outages; updating our Cancer Screening and Support Center to better the client experience; and more.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates about the progress here at LifeCare Alliance! As always, your support allows us to continue helping people live with more hope, security, and independence.

Run to Support Camp

By eNewsletter, June 2024 Newsletter

As you may know, LifeCare Alliance has an array of Nutrition, Health, and Support services. One of the support programs provided by LifeCare Alliance is Camp Hamwi, a haven for children and teens with diabetes to learn and grow in a supportive environment. Camp Hamwi provides a unique opportunity for youths to connect with peers who share similar experiences and challenges while still enjoying the summer camp experience. For the past 58 years, Camp Hamwi has hosted hundreds of children each summer.

For some of our campers, cost can be a barrier to attending. But by running in the Dash for Camp, you can help our campers experience all that camp has to offer. Dedicated to supporting Camp Hamwi, The Dash for Camp 5K walk/run is a great way to gather a group of friends, family, and community members together to enjoy a day outside and support a good cause.

The Dash for Camp will take place on Saturday, November 9 at Merchant Park/Heritage Rail Trail in Hilliard. The 5K kicks off at 9:30 am, but participants can arrive early for packet pickup and refreshments.

If you have any questions regarding how to get involved with Camp Hamwi or The Dash for Camp, please contact Danielle Visconti at dvisconti@lifecarealliance.org.

Helping Central Ohio Beat the Heat

By eNewsletter, June 2024 Newsletter

At LifeCare Alliance, we have been committed to recognizing and meeting the needs of our clients and the Central Ohio community for over a century. In recent years, we have noticed a concerning trend. Individuals who are homebound due to aging, a medical condition, or disability are at a higher risk of experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

To address these concerns, we launched the Beat the Heat Fan Campaign over 20 years ago. Throughout the summer and into the fall, LifeCare Alliance collects and distributes over 2,000 box fans to our clients and residents of Franklin County to help people live with more security and self-reliance. For the past two decades, we’ve been fortunate to have an Alliance of dedicated volunteers, supporters, and partners help drive the campaign’s success.

The Beat the Heat Fan Campaign continually welcomes donations of boxed fans during the summer. New fans in their boxes can be dropped off at LifeCare Alliance or at a local fire station, where they serve as drop sites for the community.

If you are interested in getting involved, or have any questions about the Beat the Heat Fan Campaign, please contact Anne Peters at apeters@lifecarealliance.org.
