Continuing Proof That Our Approach Works!

By May 2025, Uncategorized

In 2022, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) awarded LifeCare Alliance nearly $3 million for a multi-year Innovations in Nutrition and Services grant to study how integrating nutrition services with health programs can positively impact health outcomes for seniors 60 years of age and older.

The goal of this research is to create an evidence-based model to prove the hypothesis that combining home delivered meals with the services of a Registered Dietitian and occupational therapist can help older Americans remain independent and living in their own homes longer and more securely. This is the second Innovations in Nutrition and Services grant LifeCare Alliance has been awarded. Previously, the ACL awarded the agency $750,000 which allowed us to expand our model of care to increase internal case management, strengthen our referral infrastructure, and collect critical health outcome data to measure the success and impact of our interventions.

The team wrapped up a pilot of the study and moved into the first wave of research in August 2024. Study participants receive either Meals-on-Wheels only, Meals-on-Wheels with Registered Dietitian services, Meals-on-Wheels with occupational therapy, or Meals-on-Wheels, Registered Dietitian services, and occupational therapy. Through the end of March 2025, the team has enrolled 159 households into the study to evaluate the following research question: Compared to meals alone, what is the effect of Registered Dietitian and occupational therapy services on fall risk among home delivered meal clients?

The ultimate objective of the current grant is to create a replicable model that can be used as an example for Meals on Wheels providers across the country. Once again, as in the days when we were chosen to pilot one of the first home delivered meals programs in the nation, LifeCare Alliance is leading the way in empowering seniors to live independently in their own homes—right where they want to be.

*This project was supported, in part by grant number 90INNU0044, from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. Grantees undertaking projects with government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions. Points of view or opinions do not, therefore, necessarily represent official ACL policy.

Flipping the Script on Aging

By May 2025

May is Older Americans Month, a time designated by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) to encourage communities to recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities.

With this year’s theme being “Flipping the Script on Aging,” we thought it would be fun to introduce you to some older adults who’ve flipped the script following their retirement by joining our Nutrition program operations team. Vice President of Operations Molly Haroz affectionately calls this LifeCare Alliance’s “Retiree Army” and says they keep things running smoothly at our Harmon Avenue kitchen and distribution center.

The Smiling Face of Carrie’s Cafe

Na’Anna Davis is the smiling face that greets guests at Carrie’s Café every day at lunchtime. A former United States Postal Service employee for 38 years, Na’Anna wore lots of hats at the Post Office, from management to postal vehicle maintenance to handling the mail holds for people who were out of town. She was a real utility player.

She retired from the USPS in January of 2008, and by August, she was ready to move on to her next adventure. That’s when she started working for LifeCare Alliance. Although her job entails lots of paper work and making sure that the seniors who come to Carrie’s Café are accounted for in LifeCare Alliance’s system, her main focus is greeting the clients each day, helping them sign-in, answering their questions, and making sure their experience at Carrie’s Café is one they find enjoyable and engaging.

Na’Anna says following the forced shutdown of Carrie’s Café during COVID that she was afraid seniors wouldn’t come back. Slowly but surely they have.

“Many weren’t really sure they wanted to come back, but they did because Carrie’s Café gives them a purpose and a reason to get up and get out of the house,” she says.

“They talk about loneliness and how Carrie’s Café helps them battle it by giving them camaraderie and someone to sit and talk with. And many of them talk to me about their lives and their families and the challenges they are facing because they know I will keep it to myself.”

When asked how she has flipped the script on aging, Na’Anna laughs and says, “Well I married a younger man!”

In all seriousness though, Na’Anna says that her job at Carrie’s Café has kept her young. It has given her a purpose and a reason to get up every morning.

“It used to be on Sunday nights, I would start dreading the following day. But now, I pop right up on Monday mornings because each day is a different day.”

The Best Job Ever

Richard Cook retired from Honda of America Manufacturing in Marysville where he started as an assembly line worker and then became a maintenance tech and supervisor. Over his 35 years with Honda, Richard had the opportunity to work on all kinds of vehicles and motorcycles—but he says the best job he’s ever had involving wheels has to be delivering Meals-on-Wheels.

“It’s the best job I’ve ever had in this world,” says Richard.

“You feel really appreciated and like you are doing a good job.”

Richard has been delivering meals for three years, mostly on the south side of Columbus. He says he’s gotten to know the people on his route. He’s even had occasion to help one of his clients who fainted at the door. Richard jumped into action, calling 9-1-1 and staying with the client until the emergency responders arrived. He says he still gets to see that client on his route and it makes him feel good to know that he had a hand in making sure the client is still living on his own.

Richard’s advice for flipping the script on aging is to live every day to its fullest. The older you get, the more you realize you just don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Richard lives to his fullest through travel. He and a companion travelled to Cancun earlier this year and they have plans for Costa Rica in August.

“I’m a firm believer in doing what you can to enjoy every day, and that’s part of why I like my job at LifeCare Alliance.”

A Kind and Caring Heart

Donna Henderson worked for 32 years at the Ohio School for the Deaf Library. Fluent in sign language, she loved working with the children to help them use the library to access resources for school projects and to fuel their imaginations. When she retired from that, she thought she was ready to stay home and be a lady of leisure. That lasted for about 30 days before she was bored and ready to climb the walls (which she had thoroughly washed down during her 30-day hiatus).

Her husband Mitchell worked at LifeCare Alliance in the Nutrition program, running Carrie’s Café. Donna joined LifeCare Alliance in 2016 helping out with miscellaneous projects from conducting annual assessments on Meals-on-Wheels clients to helping run a special dining center program for seniors in the Somali community.

Recently, Donna has joined a team that runs a new Memory Café being held at Carrie’s Café in conjunction with researchers from The Ohio State University. These special programs offer an afternoon of connection and engagement for individuals afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and their caretakers. The program helps people with memory issues get out of the house and engage in meaningful activities and lets caregivers socialize with others who are facing similar challenges as they are.

Donna believes that continuing to work at LifeCare Alliance after retiring has helped change her perception on aging. She hopes to inspire others to stay active and engaged as they age. With her work with the Memory Café she can continue to exercise the kind heart that made her feel so rewarded working with children who were deaf.

A Fresh Look at Aging

Dedra Thompson is part of the “Retiree Army” who heads up LifeCare Alliance’s Senior Nutrition Farmers Market program, providing fresh produce and honey to seniors enrolled in this program every year.

Dedra transitioned to LifeCare Alliance from a 35-year career at Nationwide Insurance where she was part of a corporate team of volunteers who delivered Meals-on-Wheels

After retiring, Dedra started out volunteering in the Nutrition program offices. The staff soon recognized her skills in organizing and coordinating programs and asked her if she’d like a part-time job. Now, she’s involved in helping re-enroll clients for home delivered meals and updating LifeCare Alliance’s new Savor and Select menus.

Two days a week, Dedra helps run the senior dining center program in her hometown of Grove City. When it comes to flipping the script on aging, Dedra takes inspiration from her 88-year-old mother who still comes to the dining center. She says she enjoys seeing her mother still being active and engaged with neighbors and friends, while making sure she’s getting a hot, nutritious meal.

As spring unfolds, and summer is around the corner, Dedra is preparing for the next Senior Nutrition Farmers Market. She says seeing these seniors who are still so active and appreciative of the access to fresh produce is what helps keep her outlook fresh and positive.

Learning lessons from the LifeCare Alliance Retiree Army — how will you flip the script on aging?

Donor Spotlight: Barbara Main

By eNewsletter, March 2025 Newsletter

We wanted to take a moment to honor a longtime donor and volunteer, Barbara Main, who has been a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer for the past 25 years.

Barbara first heard about LifeCare Alliance through a Bible study group at her church, where she and her fellow members, along with their husbands, began volunteering for a route on Saturdays. She was inspired to volunteer at LifeCare because, for her, ‘It’s the least I can do—to give back to those less fortunate and in need, whether they are strangers or perhaps a friend.’ She hopes that her small contribution makes a difference in someone’s life that day or week—especially when delivering her meal route.

“It gives us the opportunity to provide food for the client and check on them when we stop at their home,” Barbara says. “We get to know the people on our route and really care about them. When a client goes off the route, we get concerned and wonder if they’re ok. It is a privilege to serve each client, as they make every day so interesting and worthwhile.”

Are you a great team or want to find ways to be a better one? Is there a cause one or both of you care strongly about? Do you enjoy giving back to the community? Couples who spend quality time doing something meaningful together are likely to find a sense of purpose and develop a new shared interest.

Finding quality time with your sweetie can often be a challenge for those with commitments and busy schedules. So when it comes to doing an activity that’s rewarding and fun, consider volunteering together!

Volunteering gives couples fresh things to talk about and helps them create shared memories and make twice the impact while helping others! How’s that for a win? We’d love to introduce you to two amazing volunteer couples that deliver Meals-on-Wheels. We hope that you’re encouraged by these impactful volunteer duos and invite you to pair up with a friend, spouse, partner, or bestie and make a difference today. Reach out to the volunteer team to get started!

Pat and Tom Miller from West Jefferson, Ohio

“Volunteering together gives us a common activity as well as a second pair of eyes and ears while talking to our Meals-on-Wheels recipients. We like doing things together because it is easier with two people while routing and distributing meals.

We like meeting new people and getting to know them visit by visit. The smiles on their faces are very rewarding to us. The service LifeCare Alliance provides is essential to the well-being of the people we visit. We feel grateful to be able to give back to the community.”

Gene and Terry Martini from Ashley, Ohio

“We volunteer together in Marion, Ohio because it gives us an activity we can share. I think our favorite part of volunteering is that we get to serve others that are in need of help, it could be us someday and we hope there will be volunteers to help us. We encourage everyone who is able to volunteer at something, it is very rewarding to see so many people so happy when we deliver the meals, it’s not much, but it helps.”

Love Your Pet Day

By eNewsletter, February 2025 Newsletter

February 20 is Love Your Pet Day, an occasion dedicated to recognizing the bond between humans and animals. For the elderly and homebound, pets are more than just companions; they are a source of emotional support, stability, and joy. At LifeCare Alliance, we make every effort to ensure those in need can experience the life-changing benefits of pet ownership.

For elderly and homebound individuals who are struggling financially, caring for a pet can become an overwhelming challenge. In response to this need, LifeCare Alliance offers essential pet-related services for seniors, providing pet food and financial assistance for veterinary bills to over 270 clients and more than 300 pets a year.

“Many of our clients would face a difficult decision if they couldn’t provide for their pets,” says Claire Eastman, Chief Corporate & Community Engagement Officer. “Our goal is to ensure that seniors don’t have to choose between their own well-being and the well-being of their beloved animals. Pets play a critical role in the lives of our clients, and we are proud to support our clients and their pets.”

LifeCare Alliance’s pet care program is just one of many initiatives that reflect the growing recognition of the importance of pets in the lives of vulnerable populations. By alleviating the financial burden of pet care, LifeCare Alliance ensures that seniors can maintain their relationships with their pets while receiving the support they need to thrive.

The therapeutic bond between humans and pets is not just anecdotal; it is supported by science. Researchers have long recognized the positive impact animals have on human health, especially in fostering emotional and psychological stability. A study published in the Journal of Aging and Health found that seniors who owned pets were less likely to suffer from depression and were more likely to report higher levels of happiness and satisfaction with their lives.

Dr. Erika Friedmann, a professor of nursing at the University of Maryland, has conducted extensive research into the role of pets in the lives of the elderly. She asserts, “Pets provide a source of constant companionship, and their non-judgmental nature helps mitigate feelings of depression or anxiety. For elderly individuals, this relationship can become a life raft in a sea of emotional challenges.” Research by Dr. Friedmann and others has found that simply having a pet nearby can help lower feelings of stress and anxiety in elderly individuals, contributing to a sense of emotional stability.

Whether it’s a dog, a cat, or even a bird or rabbit, pets have a remarkable way of making life brighter, especially for those who may feel isolated or disconnected. On Love Your Pet Day and throughout the year, support those in need and their pets by volunteering to deliver pet food with LifeCare Alliance. We couldn’t provide the support we offer without our amazing volunteers. And, as always, Being There Matters™.

Need a Resolution Re-do? Volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels

By eNewsletter, February 2025 Newsletter

Do you hate the term New Year’s Resolution?  Are you one of those people who never make them?  Or worse yet – make them and then break them in the first few weeks of the year?

Maybe it’s because the goals you’re putting in place for yourself, such as exercising more, losing weight, or spending less time on your phone, fill you with dread and give you a sense of pressure rather than the serotonin boost you’re looking for.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone!  Research has shown that 90% of people quit their New Year’s resolutions by February every year.

By spending your time in more meaningful ways, such as volunteering with Meals-on-Wheels, you will be able to improve not just your physical health but your mental and emotional health too.

We have flexible schedules, which make it easy to fit meal delivery into your life – just what you’re looking for!  Whether you’re able to commit to a regular route once a week, once a month, or once a quarter, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. The key is committing to a regular routine that you can keep up with – and feel good about yourself!

Project OpenHand-Columbus Marks 20 Years as a LifeCare Alliance Program

By eNewsletter, Featured News, January 2025 Newsletter

Matt Taylor had a vision. Inspired by Project OpenHand organizations on the East and West coasts offering nutritional support to people with HIV/AIDS, he wanted to bring a similar service to Columbus that would address the nutritional needs of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS.

Taylor, a popular floor manager at COSI, was living with the disease himself and knew firsthand how important proper nutrition was. Malnutrition and wasting syndrome were common with HIV/AIDS and in the days before antiretroviral medications were readily available, proper nutrition was the only way to fight the disease. After spending time volunteering in Project OpenHand kitchens in San Francisco and New York, Matt established Project Open-Hand Columbus in 1994. His first 10 meals were delivered to patients at the Pater Noster House, an AIDS hospice on Broad Street.

Project OpenHand – Columbus became a LifeCare Alliance program in December of 2004, representing one of the earliest mergers of nonprofit organizations in Central Ohio. The merger allowed us to offer more services, including one-on-one nutrition counseling and customized Walmart food deliveries to meet the nutritional and dietary needs of those living with HIV/AIDS.

We currently serve about 400 clients, 111 of which receive frozen home delivered meals. Most of our clients utilize our Walmart delivery program, a partnership with Columbus Public Health and the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. Our registered dieticians create customized grocery orders, which are delivered on a monthly basis to clients of Project OpenHand—Columbus.  From September 2023 to September 2024, we completed 1,413 orders, which equates to nearly 71,000 meals.

Thanks to your continued generosity and support, the legacy of Matt Taylor lives on. From the initial 10 clients in 1994 to the hundreds we serve today, our goal has remained the same – to meet the nutritional needs of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in Central Ohio.

National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

By Columbus Cancer Clinic, eNewsletter, Featured News, January 2025 Newsletter

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide. The American Cancer Society estimated that in the United States in 2024:

  • About 13,820 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed
  • About 4,360 women died from cervical cancer

Fortunately, cervical cancer is highly curable and treatable – if it’s caught in the early stages.

Having regular screenings can help find cervical cancer early when it’s small and has not spread, making it easier to treat. At the LifeCare Alliance Cancer Screening and Support Center, we offer the HPV test and the Pap test for cervical cancer screening.

Women can schedule a cervical cancer screening at the Cancer Screening and Support Center. Most major insurances are accepted but if you don’t have health insurance, or cannot afford your co-pays, don’t let that stop you from getting this life-saving screening.

You might be eligible for coverage through the Ohio Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP). This program provides free and low-cost cervical cancer screenings for women ages 21 to 64, and may, should your test come back positive for cancer, help you get medical insurance coverage for further diagnostics and treatment.

The LifeCare Alliance Cancer Screening and Support Center is a BCCP enrollment site where you can be screened for cervical cancer as well as breast cancer. The center has become one of the largest enrollment sites in the state. Due to the success of our program, the Ohio Department of Health recently featured us in a video of best practices for enrolling women in this program. This video has been pushed out across the state as a teaching tool, showing other medical clinics how easy it is to enroll patients in the program.

To schedule an appointment with our certified nurse practitioner, call LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services at 614-263-5006.

Mental Health as Critical as Physical Health for Older Adults

By eNewsletter, Featured News, January 2025 Newsletter

January is Mental Wellness Month, and while mental health is a topic that’s frequently talked about in our world today, there’s one group we tend to overlook: older adults. Mental health problems in older adults often fall under the radar because they’re assumed to be normal signs of aging. Depression and anxiety are often brought on by the changes many people face later in life. Retirement, loss of a loved one, or prolonged illness may leave them feeling lonely, sad, and isolated.

Although LifeCare Alliance is known for the services we deliver including nutritious meals, personal care, housekeeping, etc., these services go much further.  For instance, Meals-on-Wheels offers our older clients more than a meal: we offer them connection, companionship, and support. Quite often a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer may be the only person the client sees all day, and seeing that familiar face boosts their mood and lets them know they’re not alone.

But clients are not the only people who benefit from these interactions. Volunteers often report a mood boost after delivering a Meals-on-Wheels route, and helping others can be a positive form of self-care. The relationships formed, and conversations shared, can be just as meaningful for both clients and volunteers. These interactions foster a sense of belonging, purpose, and community that benefit the wellness of everyone involved.

What’s the Difference Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes?

By eNewsletter, Featured News, November 2024 Newsletter

While many people have heard of diabetes, there may be much confusion around the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. To help you understand the main differences, here are a few of the most distinguishing aspects of each type.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune disorder that is often diagnosed in young people but can develop at any age. Researchers aren’t sure how to prevent it or what triggers it, but type 1 diabetes requires the administration of insulin, typically through an injection or a wearable insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring system.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot use insulin properly. While researchers are still looking for an exact cause, genetics play a part in risk factors. There is no cure, but it can be controlled through lifestyle and medical interventions. It is most commonly diagnosed in adults, and although the incidence of type 2 diabetes in children is relatively low, it has nearly doubled in the United States since 2003.

Diabetes has become the world’s fastest-growing chronic disease, prompting the CDC to declare it a global epidemic.

November is American Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to spread awareness, educate, and advocate for those living with diabetes. According to the CDC, more than 38 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. With that being nearly 12% of the U.S. population, the odds are high that you know someone who is living with this disease. November is a great opportunity to learn more and understand the condition.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body cannot use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that moves blood glucose (blood sugar) into cells so that it can be converted into energy. Without enough insulin, the blood glucose sits outside the cells, building up in the bloodstream. This causes high blood glucose, which, over time, if left untreated, can lead to life-threatening complications.

Diabetes is one of the leading diagnoses for LifeCare Alliance Meals-on-Wheels clients, so we have a vested interest in educating, counseling, and supporting those clients in managing their disease. In addition, we operate a summer camp program for youths living with diabetes. LifeCare Alliance has a long-standing dedication to helping people of all ages manage their diabetes so that they may live healthier lives.

This month we encourage you to learn all you can about diabetes and how you and your loved ones can live with independence and dignity while battling this disease.

How Our New Partnership with The James Assists Health Care Navigation

By eNewsletter, Featured News, October 2024 Newsletter

Navigating health care can be difficult and confusing. After going years without medical screenings or primary care, many of our new patients express fear around the entire process. From an initial phone call and appointment to multiple referrals and overwhelming medical institutions, many patients can quickly become frustrated. Sometimes, they may even give up on seeking care all together.

Through our new partnership with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), LifeCare Alliance is able to create a smooth and accessible process for cancer treatment.

Until now, LifeCare Alliance has provided cancer screening and diagnostic services independently, partnering with a number of medical and diagnostic professionals over the years – including Arthur G. James, MD, for whom The James is named and who served as medical director of the Columbus Cancer Clinic for more than 33 years. This new partnership with the OSUCCC – James centralizes and streamlines the breast cancer screening and follow-up process for the thousands of women served by LifeCare Alliance annually. Through this partnership, patients will have access to advanced screening mammography tools and an electronic medical record system for follow-up communication and care coordination.

Take, for example, the story of Tesiralyn. A regular patient at LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services, she recently had her annual mammogram, which showed a concerning mass. At that same appointment, our nurse practitioner Kathy Magee was able to schedule a biopsy for Tesiralyn at OSUCCC – James. Tesiralyn said it was a quick process, and within five minutes she had an appointment time and directions. Thanks to the partnership, she got the care she needed in an easy, streamlined, and unintimidating manner.

When she showed up for her breast screening, she was happy to see a familiar face. Tami Crum, the mammographer from LifeCare Alliance, was at OSUCCC – James that day to perform her screening. Tesiralyn had started the day anxious and concerned, but Tami talked her through the process, calming her down and gently performing her screening. Tesiralyn says she didn’t even feel a pinch!

Luckily, her screenings came back as cancer-free. Thanks to the partnership between OSUCCC – James and LifeCare Alliance, she was able to have a smooth experience filled with people she knew and trusted performing her screenings.

“I’m so thankful,” she says. “LifeCare Alliance accommodates me and schedules me. You are so friendly. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

What You Should Know About Social Determinants of Health

By eNewsletter, Featured News, October 2024 Newsletter

Social determinants of health is a bit of a buzzword floating around the health care industry—but what exactly does it mean?

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are “the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks” (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion). Basically, SDOH are anything that can impact a person’s health outside of genetic makeup.

But why does this matter? According to the National Cancer Institute, less than 10% of cancers have a hereditary component—the rest are born out of our environment. Research published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine suggests that more than 80% of health care disparities are caused by SDOH

Here are some examples of common SDOH:

  • Housing stability
  • Access to transportation
  • Education
  • Food security
  • Health insurance
  • Income level and employment status
  • Access to clean water
  • Air quality
  • Internet connection
  • Physical proximity to health care
  • Spoken languages

Each and every one of these determinants can impact a person’s ability to access high quality health care, thus also affecting their quality of life. LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services addresses 7 of these 11 SDOHs, along with many others.

“When we think about cancer patients and helping to get them through treatment, it’s not just about the immediate need,” says Christin Brown, Director of Cancer Services at LifeCare Alliance. “It’s about all their needs as a person.”

SDOH can affect health outcomes around cancer in many ways. Consider:

  • If Jonathan has less education around carcinogens, he may be more likely to be unknowingly exposed. Jonathan may know that sunscreen prevents sunburn, but not that it also prevents skin cancer. Since he doesn’t burn easily, he never wears it, even on long days outside, thus increasing his risk for cancer.
  • If Rhonda doesn’t have health insurance, she may not be up to date on her mammograms. Mammograms are key for catching breast cancer at an early stage, when it is more treatable. Stage one and two breast cancer have an over 90% five year survival rate, compared to stage IV which has a 25% survival rate (Cancer Research UK).
  • If Luis has cancer but no reliable transportation, he cannot make all his appointments, thus making it less effective.
  • If Layla has to choose between paying the rent for their family’s housing and her cancer medication, she will likely neglect their treatment.
  • If Nila’s family doesn’t have internet access, like the one in five Franklin County households, she is less likely to schedule follow up care and follow directions from her health care provider simply because she cannot access her electronic records (The Ohio State University).

“Social determinants of health are actually going to be huge factors in whether a patient follows through with treatment or not,” says Kathy Magee, a nurse practitioner at LifeCare Alliance. “If you can’t take the medicines prescribed, if you can’t pay for the meds, if you don’t have the health literacy to understand what’s being told to you, or if you don’t have access to healthy food, then your outcome is going to be a lot less favorable.”

So how can we address SDOH? By supporting services that address these gaps in health care, like LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services. We look at all aspects of a patient’s treatment, working to provide support so that patients can receive equitable health care. LifeCare Alliance and Ohio Department of Health Bridge the Gap in Cancer Screenings

By eNewsletter, Featured News, October 2024 Newsletter

Regular mammograms and cervical cancer screenings can be lifesaving. When caught early, nearly all breast and cervical cancers are highly treatable. However, a mammogram can cost as much as $549 out of pocket. In Ohio, most women have insurance or Medicaid and these screenings are covered at no cost. But for those uninsured or underinsured, finding the funds for screenings can be difficult.

Medicaid covers those in Ohio 138% or below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), but that still leaves many without coverage. That is where the Ohio Department of Health Breast & Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP) steps in. The BCCP partners with local clinics to ensure women at or below 300% of the FPL can get the screenings they need, regardless of insurance status.

LifeCare Alliance Cancer Screening & Support Center is proud to partner with the BCCP, enrolling more women than any of the 360 clinics involved. Our screening of nearly 2,000 women makes up for 13.2% of all BCCP enrollments. Through our free clinic model utilizing the BCCP program, community engagement, and addressing social needs, LifeCare Alliance is providing high-quality cancer screenings to under resourced women in Ohio at a higher rate than any other Ohio provider.

Our work here at LifeCare Alliance is changing lives, and the medical community is beginning to recognize that on a national level. Director of LifeCare Alliance Cancer Services Christin Brown and Nurse Practitioner Kathy Magee co-authored a research paper, “Improving access to breast and cervical cancer screening with a free cancer screening clinic model,” which is about to be published in the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship. In November, the two will travel to Las Vegas to present their findings at the annual conference of the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators.

At LifeCare Alliance, we believe that Being There Matters™ – and thanks to our partnership with the BCCP, we are there for women when they need us most.

We rely on student volunteers and highly value the time they dedicate to help us meet the needs of our clients–often on weekends, on holidays, and during the summer. Volunteering can help a student take initiative, feel good about giving back to the community, learn new things, and even strengthen a skill set.

Are you a student, a teacher, have a student athlete, need service hours for a class or graduation, or are part of a homeschool co-op? Then here are a few ways you can volunteer with us:

  1. Collect items as a class or entire school for our Cancer Nutrition & Personal Items Pantry.
  2. Create holiday ornaments for seniors.
  3. Make cheer cards for homebound seniors to be delivered with meals. This is great for all ages and year-round!
  4. Deliver lunchtime meals with your team or co-op families. Routes are available seven days a week, all around Central Ohio for one-time and recurring options!
  5. Help our kitchen prepare for deliveries with a variety of tasks.

There’s a place for you in our Alliance of students and schools. Will you join us this year?

Email us at volunteer@lifecarealliance.org to get started!

Bridges Community Action Team

Many of us look forward to the day that we can finally retire and have the freedom of unlimited time to explore hobbies, travel, and leisure. However, after being retired for a while, sometimes we can become bored and lack a purpose. Having a social activity to look forward to benefits both volunteers and community members. Four-year volunteer Mark Baird says, “By delivering Meals-on-Wheels, I understand that living on your own can be a challenge for a lot of people. I’m able to help people maintain their independence.”

Delivering Meals-on-Wheels is a great way for retirees to remain active and find meaning. Five-year volunteer Karen Kennedy and her husband Michael deliver meals together. “We both started because we wanted to do some volunteer work in our retirement years, and this is a really good way to help the community. Our route takes about an hour and a half and we’re home by lunchtime.”

For some volunteers, the route is more than delivering meals. “I like helping people,” says Karen. “One client wanted to get a marker for her brother’s gravesite in a veteran’s cemetery. She did not use a computer so I printed out the rules for her. I also like to provide fresh produce from my garden.”

Ben and Kathy Iven

Daniel Wren has delivered meals in Bellefontaine for four years. He shares, “The thing that makes me want to do Meals-on-Wheels is seeing the joy in the faces of the people we serve. It is very gratifying knowing that this small part is helping many. And I have met a lot of very nice people doing this.”

LifeCare Alliance makes it easy for snowbirds or anyone to volunteer with flexible shifts to work around your life. You can even volunteer with your grandkids or other retirees. A ride-a-along can be arranged with a current volunteer to show you the ropes. To get started, contact us today by calling Stephanie Sparrow Hughes at 614-437-2815 or by emailing volunteer@lifecarealliance.org. Apply online https://www.lifecarealliance.org/volunteer/apply

LifeCare Alliance Expands Volunteer Opportunities with New Off-Site Programs

By eNewsletter, Featured News, September 2024 Newsletter

Written by Anne Peters

Off-site volunteering is an innovative approach to support LifeCare Alliance and allows us to reach more volunteers beyond a traditional volunteer setting. Off-site volunteering means that, rather than volunteers coming to LifeCare Alliance, we bring the volunteering to you! Whether it be at a work place, church, or school, we can find a way to be there. These expanded offerings enhance community involvement and support for these essential programs, offering flexible ways for individuals to contribute their time and skills and engage in meaningful activities at a time that fits their personal schedules.

LifeCare Alliance recently collaborated with Root Insurance through this program. Team members made client cheer cards, prepared bag liners for Meals-on-Wheels delivery, and portioned dog treats for senior pet care. Just a month after this initial event, due to the positive feedback they received from their employees, Root Insurance invited LifeCare Alliance back for a second event.

Over the course of 90 minutes, Root Insurance employees created beautiful handmade greeting cards, gift bags, and ornaments for our holiday program. They also got further into the spirit by playing holiday music, helping to make this a great team bonding memory. These personal touches will add a special warmth to the holiday season for clients, reflecting the spirit of giving and community support.

If you are interested in learning more about how you can host a volunteer activity at your place of employment or in your community, please reach out to LifeCare Alliance’s volunteer team at Volunteer@lifecarealliance.org

Building Your Legacy

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

August is Make-a-Will Month, serving as a great reminder to update your current will or take the first step towards writing one. While making your will, you can easily include an estate gift to a nonprofit organization, such as LifeCare Alliance. Plus, if you decide to include LifeCare Alliance in your estate plans at the $25,000 or above level, you’ll be recognized in the Catherine Nelson Black Society.

Below are six different ways you can give an estate gift to a nonprofit and the benefits associated with it. You should always talk to your financial planner and tax advisor before making any decisions.

  1. Bequests Through Wills: One of the simplest ways to make a planned gift is by including a nonprofit organization in your will. You can specify a certain amount or a percentage of your estate to be donated to the organization upon your passing. This allows you to support their mission while ensuring your assets are used according to your wishes.
  2. Charitable Gift Annuities: A charitable gift annuity involves donating assets to a nonprofit in exchange for a guaranteed income stream for yourself or a loved one for a specified period. Afterward, the remaining amount goes to the nonprofit. This can provide you with tax benefits and a steady income during your lifetime.
  3. Charitable Remainder Trusts: A charitable remainder trust allows you to place assets into a trust that provides income to you or your beneficiaries for a set number of years or life. Afterward, the remaining assets are distributed to the nonprofit organization. This method can offer tax advantages and flexibility in estate planning.
  4. Life Insurance Policies: You can name a nonprofit organization as a life insurance policy beneficiary. This allows you to make a substantial gift without significantly affecting your current financial situation. You can either donate a policy you no longer need or purchase a new policy specifically for this purpose.
  5. Retirement Plan Assets: Naming a nonprofit organization as a beneficiary of your retirement accounts, such as an IRA or 401(k), can be a tax-efficient way to make a charitable gift. Retirement plan assets donated to nonprofits are typically not subject to income or estate taxes, making them a valuable option for planned giving.
  6. Real Estate or Tangible Personal Property: Donating real estate, artwork, collectibles, or other valuable assets to a nonprofit organization can be another way to make a significant impact. These donations can often provide tax benefits while supporting the nonprofit’s mission.

When considering making a planned gift to a nonprofit, it’s essential to consult with financial and legal advisors to understand the implications and ensure your wishes are accurately reflected in your estate planning documents. By planning your charitable giving strategically, you can create a lasting legacy that supports causes you are passionate about for generations to come.

Transforming Intentions into Impact: Join the 1898 Society Today

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

Most of us want to give back, yet finding the time and method to do so effectively can be a challenge. For many of us, good intentions often fall by the wayside without a structured approach.

“I used to be quite passive about giving back—whether through reviews, donations, or volunteering. I needed structure to follow through. If it’s scheduled into my routine (a monthly Meals-on-Wheels route), deducted automatically (1898 Society), or asked directly (this email), count me in. It’s about turning good intentions into meaningful action,” shared one of our dedicated donors, Molly.

This sentiment resonates deeply with the ethos of the 1898 Society, where small actions lead to significant impacts. Named in honor of the year our organization was founded, the 1898 Society is designed for individuals who, like Molly, seek to make a consistent and lasting difference.

Joining the 1898 Society means more than just setting up automated donations—it signifies a commitment to turning your philanthropic aspirations into tangible support for our mission. By contributing regularly, you support our vital work in helping to restore the stability and self-reliance of our clients who face challenges stemming from medical conditions, disabilities, and aging in place.

Molly’s story is a testament to the transformative power of structured giving. By automating her contributions, she’s seamlessly integrated philanthropy into their routine, ensuring ongoing support without the hassle. This decision has not only simplified her giving process but also magnified its impact.

As we navigate the challenges of our times, the need for reliable support has never been greater. By becoming a member of the 1898 Society, you join a community of like-minded individuals committed to effecting positive change. Together, we can amplify our collective impact and make a difference where it matters most.

Take the next step today to increase your impact by joining the 1898 Society. Let’s turn intentions into action and create a brighter future for all.

A suggested introductory gift of $18.98 (or more) per month would help deliver meals and regular wellness checks to an older adult for six weeks! Your contribution will truly serve as a testament of how much Being There Matters™.

To join, go to this link today. If you have questions about The 1898 Society, please get in touch with Emily Armbrecht at earmbrecht@lifecarealliance.org or 614.437.2872.

Celebrating Impact: Camp Hamwi Red Carpet Day

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

On July 30, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Red Carpet Day at Camp Hamwi. This day brought supporters, camp staff, and campers together for a day filled with connection and fun. Camp Hamwi is a summer camp for children and teenagers living with diabetes. Campers have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in an environment where they feel empowered in their diabetes management while enjoying a camp experience and making lifelong friends.

Camp Hamwi’s Red Carpet Day was an opportunity for donors and supporters to see firsthand the impact their support helps sustain. With their contributions, Camp Hamwi is able to grow and improve each year, making more opportunities and activities available for campers to enjoy. Last year, with the help and generosity of Camp Hamwi supporters, we were able to purchase CampViews, an electronic medical record system that monitors glucose levels. With the monitoring of both CampViews and the camp staff, parents can have peace of mind while their child is away at camp.

During Red Carpet Day, our guests gathered to enjoy lunch alongside the campers. They witnessed the comradery among campers and participated in the camp cheers. After lunch, our guests received an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the campgrounds, seeing everything that Camp Hamwi has to offer – including the horses! We all left camp feeling inspired by the positive impact Camp Hamwi has on the hundreds of youths who gathered for a week of connection, joy, and fun!

If you are interested in learning more about Camp Hamwi and next year’s Red Carpet Day, please contact Danielle Visconti at dvisconti@lifecarealliance.org.

How to Celebrate the Nonprofit Sector on Labor Day

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

An older man bringing food to a table at a Labor Day cook out

This Labor Day, we invite you to celebrate an essential sector of the American workforce: nonprofits. Here are a few statistics about the industry in Ohio.

  • Nonprofits employ more than 12% of Ohio workers.
  • There are nearly 60,000 nonprofits.
  • The nonprofit sector generates over $103.2 billion in annual revenue for the state.
  • Yearly volunteer service work is worth an estimated $6.7 billion.
  • 3,052,430 volunteers contribute 278 million hours of service a year.
  • 33.2% of Ohioans volunteer.

As we can see by these stats, the nonprofit sector and the volunteers that help support it truly contribute towards a thriving economy in Ohio. We at LifeCare Alliance are thankful for all our volunteers, associates, and supporters. Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to continue providing our vital services to more than 20,000 Central Ohioans a year. And for that, we thank you.

In honor of Labor Day and in celebration of the nonprofit industry, here are a few things you can do:

  • Celebrate with community—Invite friends and neighbors to your holiday barbecue and check on the older adults in your life. Fighting loneliness in our communities is an easy way to support many nonprofits’ missions.
  • Host a drive—Work together with friends and family to gather supplies and donations for the nonprofit of your choosing. At LifeCare Alliance, we are currently accepting fans, cancer pantry items, and durable medical equipment. You can view our Amazon wish list here.
  • Volunteer—Seek out local volunteer opportunities. LifeCare Alliance offers hot meal routes in five counties across Central Ohio. Sign up to volunteer Labor Day weekend at the links below:

Help Our Community Beat the Heat

By eNewsletter, Featured News, July 2024 Newsletter

As summer officially begins and temperatures soar, what better way to honor our nation’s independence than by supporting independence within our communities? LifeCare Alliance focuses on restoring our clients’ stability and self-reliance through Nutrition, Health, and Support services.

Our Beat the Heat Fan Campaign, one of our support programs, is just one of the ways we help thousands of people live with more hope, security, and independence. Did you know that simply using a fan can lower household temperatures by up to 10 degrees? For many individuals, this temperature difference can be a lifeline during the hot summer months.

The campaign is now in full swing. At our first distribution day on June 27th, we gave out 216 fans to help seniors and those with medical challenges stay healthy, happy, and safe at home. Betsy P. said “I saw you on the news and knew I needed to get right on down there.  This fan is going to help keep me cool.”

Would you join us in helping our community Beat the Heat this summer? If you are interested in contributing or volunteering, please reach out to Anne Peters at apeters@lifecarealliance.org or view our website at lifecarealliance.org/fans/ to see how you can join in the summer fun.

This Month: Christmas in July

By eNewsletter, Featured News, July 2024 Newsletter

Even though it’s 90 degrees outside and there’s no snow on the ground nor lights in the trees, we at LifeCare Alliance are already looking forward to the holiday season.

Last year, LifeCare Alliance was able to provide approximately 865 holiday gift bags to Meals-on-Wheels clients in Franklin County. This year, we are aiming high and want to create at least 1000 gift bags, expanding to support our clients in Madison, Marion, Logan, and Champaign counties as well.  To do this, however, we’ll need your help early.

To kick start our efforts, we are organizing a “Christmas in July” week of events. From July 15th to the 19th, LifeCare Alliance will welcome groups of all sizes interested in participating in pre-holiday preparations. Throughout the week, we will engage in various craft activities, including making beaded ornaments, decorating gift bags, and creating greeting cards. If crafting isn’t your forte, you can still contribute by organizing a drive in your community or workplace to collect gifts and personal hygiene items for the bags.

If you’re interested in initiating a drive, please reach out to Anne Peters at 614-437-2920 or apeters@lifecarealliance.org. For those wishing to reserve a spot for their group during our “Christmas in July” events, please contact our volunteer service coordinators at Volunteer@lifecarealliance.org.

Google Employees Give Back

By eNewsletter, Featured News, July 2024 Newsletter

Google knows how to make a big impact. Since December of 2022, the Google volunteer team has delivered nearly 50 Meals-on-Wheels routes and 935 meals. Greg Marchick, the Google employee responsible for fostering the connection between the two organizations, says that Google enjoys delivering meals because “LifeCare Alliance is an incredible nonprofit, and this is an easy way to give back. It also allows us to connect with the community and with fellow Googlers we might not normally get to interact with”.

In a world where hybrid and remote work schedules are the norm, engaging employees can be challenging. To encourage team bonding, LifeCare Alliance offers flexible volunteer opportunities, with commitments ranging anywhere from one-day service projects to regular meal routes. Teams like Google enjoy delivering meals together for the opportunity to brighten someone’s day. Additionally, volunteering is a proven way to reduce stress and increases a sense of meaning and purpose.

Greg says that, for Google, volunteering together has been pivotal to team building. “Google gives its employees the unique opportunity to go out and conduct volunteer service during our workday. So, we get to spend some of our time at work taking a break from our primary job and going out to support nonprofit organizations in our community with our fellow Googlers”.

Just like Google, your company can increase your social impact by delivering meals at any one of our convenient satellite locations in Westerville, Canal Winchester, Reynoldsburg, Hilliard, Bexley, Grove City, or Gahanna. Your team can select how often you volunteer from a one-time commitment to a quarterly or a monthly route. At our satellite locations, teams rotate having just two employees volunteer together so that everyone else on your team can continue to maintain daily operations.

To learn how your team can volunteer, contact Stephanie Sparrow Hughes with the Corporate and Community Engagement team at volunteer@lifecarealliance.org

4 Ways to Volunteer with Your Kids this Summer

By eNewsletter, Featured News, July 2024 Newsletter

Summertime volunteering offers an opportunity for kids to stay engaged while contributing to their community. Plus, many schools offer service hours in return. Volunteering can transform summer into a season of growth and discovery, keeping kids active and socially connected and helping build a strong foundation for their future. This can foster a sense of responsibility and empathy while developing essential life skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Here are four ways your kids can get involved this summer:

  1. Meals-On-Wheels – deliver nutritious meals with your family to homebound clients, ensuring they receive essential nourishment and social interaction. Volunteers can participate in this impactful program by delivering meals from one of multiple locations.
  2. Senior Pet Care – assist with delivering pet food to clients or sorting pet food into smaller-sized bags.
  3. Beat the Heat Fan Campaign – volunteer to pick up fans from fire stations and bring them to our Harmon Avenue facility or help with distributing fans to clients on our distribution dates. This campaign benefits Central Ohio’s most vulnerable residents during periods of extreme heat.
  4. Kitchen Assistance – assist with tasks such as packing meals and preparing the boxes/bags for Meals-On-Wheels deliveries at our Harmon Avenue facility.

Reach out to volunteer@lifecarealliance.com to start your summer of volunteering!
