LifeCare Alliance Nurse Wins Award in Honor of Free Clinic Appreciation Month

The Charitable Healthcare Network (CHN) has named LifeCare Alliance’s Kathy Magee, a Powell local and certified nurse practitioner at the Columbus Cancer Clinic (CCC), with the Free Clinic Nurse of the Year Award. In partnership with the Ohio Department of Health and the CHN, LifeCare Alliance is celebrating December as Free Clinic Appreciation Month.

Magee, a resident of Powell, Ohio, performs cancer screenings for breast and cervical cancer at the CCC and educates clients on suggested screening frequencies and preventative measures. If clients require additional support, Magee researches and connects them to the right community resources for their needs.

Magee is particularly passionate about making sure women without access to healthcare resources are screened for breast and cervical cancer. This aligns with the Ohio Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP), an initiative to help all women successfully navigate cancer screenings. Through BCCP enrollment, uninsured and underinsured women can receive cancer screenings and mammograms at no cost. As a BCCP designated enrollment site, the CCC conducts regular outreach to help women in underserved communities find access to critical, life-saving cancer screenings and diagnostics. Currently, the CCC has registered more women in this program than any other provider in Ohio, representing 13 percent of enrollment in the BCCP—thanks in large part to Magee’s efforts.

“The whole reason I’m at the clinic is cancer prevention,” says Magee. “I do anything I can to help women prevent it, catch it early, and make sure it gets treated quickly.”

The CCC was founded in 1921, making it one of the country’s first free cancer screening and detection facilities. It offers low-cost or free cancer screenings, mammograms, and education about cancer prevention and early detection. The clinic also offers cancer support services including interpretation services, hygiene supplies, transportation, and linkages to critical health resources. In 2022, the CCC performed nearly 5,000 mammograms, diagnostics, biopsies, and cancer screenings. The clinic is part of the Charitable Healthcare Network, a statewide network of free and charitable providers.

The Ohio Legislature, through H.B. 320 of the 130th General Assembly in 2014, designated December as Free Clinic Appreciation Month (FCAM) in Ohio. As part of this celebration, the Charitable Healthcare Network and the Ohio Department of Health recognize the accomplishments of Ohio’s free clinics with Free Clinic Award presentations.

Spanish-Speaking Volunteers Needed at Columbus Cancer Clinic

The Columbus Cancer Clinic is looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers to assist clients who do not speak English.

Volunteers for Groceries-to-Go, which serves CCC clients, would work at our 670 Harmon Ave. location and take calls for clients that speak Spanish. Volunteers in the Columbus Cancer Clinic will work at our 1699 West Mound Street location. With 38 percent of Columbus Cancer Clinic clients speaking Spanish, volunteers are especially needed. Spanish-speaking clients come in on Tuesday afternoons, on Wednesday afternoons, and on Thursdays. On those days, volunteers will interact with Spanish-speaking clients and perform task such as:

Greet patients at the door in their primary language
Perform the COVID-19 triage upon arriving for appointments
Assist patients in understanding the check-in process (Requesting their photo IDs, providing instructions for completing their registration paperwork, etc., but not for medical interpretation.)
Escorting patients to the exam room and providing instructions for changing to gowns and storing their belongings in a locker
Make appointment reminder phone calls for patients that did not agree to receiving a text or email reminder (To help reduce our no-show rate)
Call patients after we receive a referral from their PCP to schedule their appointment (Staff would then enter the appointment information in the electronic health record.)

LifeCare Alliance’s Partnership with Macy’s Leads to Stronger Communities

As we mark the one-year anniversary of quarantine, virtual events, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to work together and strengthen community collaboration has been essential in order to persevere. One such noteworthy partnership that LifeCare Alliance has shared is with Macy’s.

LifeCare Alliance’s partnership with Macy’s can be traced back to 2019, when the Agency was seeking a new venue to host Night of Hope and Support, our annual event that benefits clients with active cancer through the Heather Pick Spirit Fund of the Columbus Cancer Clinic. Macy’s at Polaris Fashion Place turned out to be the perfect fit for the event, and their team loves the work LifeCare Alliance does for the community. The manager, stylist, and the whole team at Macy’s believe in the awareness and empowerment Night of Hope provides to people living with cancer and the community at-large.

The Agency’s collaboration with Macy’s didn’t stop there. In November of last year, the store manager contacted LifeCare Alliance about an opportunity to nominate a local non-for-profit for COVID-19 relief. Because of our ongoing, trusted relationship, Macy’s nominated LifeCare Alliance and a grant was approved to support our clients.

Partnerships such as Macy’s effectively leverage the strengths of each party involved and apply it strategically to combat issues at the forefront like the pandemic. Building these relationships with a shared understanding and collective focus leads to stronger communities. Like Macy’s values of acceptance, respect, integrity, and giving back to the community, LifeCare Alliance strives to serve those in need through compassionate, responsive, quality care 365 days-a-year.

Thank you to Macy’s for their partnership and commitment in sharing our mission of leading the community in identifying and delivering health and nutrition services to meet the community’s changing needs.

Columbus Dispatch: LifeCare Alliance’s Adopt-a-Family Helps Those with Cancer Have a Merry Christmas

Gracie Davis starts crying every time she sees her Christmas presents sitting by the fireplace.

The 69-year-old Far East Side resident received the gifts through the Adopt-a-Family program by LifeCare Alliance and the Columbus Cancer Clinic.

“There’s people out there that do want to help you,” Davis said. “I’ve never had anybody do anything like that for me.”

The Adopt-a-Family program started in 2006.

The program adopted 54 families this year, which equates to 254 household members, said Christin Brown, director of the Columbus Cancer Clinic.

Why Get a Mammogram?

Why schedule your annual mammogram?

Mammograms are one of the best ways to detect breast cancer- detecting abnormalities/cancer at its earliest possible point.

Many breast cancers are found by mammograms before any symptoms even appear. Early detection is important for improved outcomes and successful treatments.

Because breast tissue changes with age, annual mammograms are highly recommended for men/women of 45 years of age and older. Depending on pre-existing health conditions and family history, women/men may need to start the annual screening process earlier – for that information, please consult a doctor.

Alternate Entrance to the Columbus Cancer Clinic

New Safety Procedures at LifeCare Alliance Wellness Centers, Columbus Cancer Clinic

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, LifeCare Alliance’s Columbus Cancer Clinic and Wellness Department are taking every precaution to ensure that clients receive care in the safest way possible for patients and staff.

Here’s what patients should expect:

Columbus Cancer Clinic

When Columbus Cancer Clinic patients arrive, they’re greeted with a temperature check, verbal health screenings, and Plexiglas between them and the clinic’s front desk. Other precautions the CCC is taking include:

Spacing out clinic appointments from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes.
Providing hand sanitizer stations, encouraging social distancing and frequent hand washing.
Requiring all patients and staff to wear face masks or face coverings.
Limiting visitors to one guest per patient

CCC Home Care Support has also put wig, bra, and prosthetic fittings on hold.

Patients who are experiencing signs of COVID-19 exposure such as coughing, fever, sore throat, and breathing difficulties have been asked to reschedule their appointments and report their symptoms to their primary healthcare provider. Patients experiencing these symptoms who don’t have a primary healthcare provider are asked to call the Ohio Department of Health COVID-19 Hotline at 1-833-427-5634.

Wellness Department

LifeCare Alliance’s Community Wellness Centers, travel clinics, and registered dietitians are conducting health screenings over the phone the day before appointments. LifeCare Alliance staff will ask patients about their health, the health of others in their household, and their recent domestic and international travel.

Patients who have been recently sick or share a household with someone who’s been recently sick will be asked to either make a telehealth appointment or reschedule their in-person appointment for a later date.

All patients and staff will wear face masks and eye coverings such as shields, goggles, and glasses during Wellness Center appointments. Registered dietitian and travel clinic appointments will require face coverings to be worn at all times.

Face-to-face dietitian meetings will be limited to LifeCare Alliance’s West Mound Street location anytime Franklin County sees an uptick in COVID-19 cases.

On June 11, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that COVID-19 tests are available to anyone who wants one, even if they are asymptomatic. To learn more about COVID-19 testing in Columbus, visit the Columbus Public Health Coronavirus Portal.

LifeCare Alliance Announces 2020 Volunteer Recognition Dates

Each year, we take the time to thank our outstanding volunteers who embody our motto of “Nourishing the Human Spirit.”

Our volunteer base is the heart of LifeCare Alliance, and the work that volunteers do is so valuable to our Agency and our clients alike. More than 100 volunteers are needed every single day to deliver Meals-on-Wheels, run errands, assist with light housekeeping tasks, assist at a Senior Dining or Wellness Center, serve on a board, make favors for our clients, or help in the office.

The year 2020 will get off to an optimistic start for cancer survivor Marvin Thomas.

Marvin’s cancer journey led him to the Columbus Cancer Clinic in 2019. Six years earlier, he had been feeling ill at work. One day Marvin came home and called his brother to tell him how he had been feeling. His brother came to his home, but when he arrived he found Marvin unconscious. It wasn’t until a week later when Marvin woke up. He had fallen into a coma and then was on life support for two weeks. The team of physicians at Mount Carmel West found out Marvin’s aorta was dissected and that he needed surgery to repair it. After being hospitalized for ninety days, Marvin was released.

During a post-surgery exam, Marvin’s physician recommended that he go to the Cleveland Clinic for more repairs to his heart. Five months later, he was back at the Cleveland Clinic for heart surgery. This time they could not operate down the front of his chest; they had to enter through his side and back. The physician said it was great that he came when he did because his aorta had started leaking again.

Marvin was once again on the road to recovery. From 2014-2017 he had to travel to Cleveland for routine heart check-ups. During one of his visits, the doctor saw what appeared to be a spot on his lung. Marvin questioned what it could be – because he has never been a smoker – and the doctor said it looked like cancer but for him to return in three months to see if it grows. It turned out, Marvin’s doctor was right. So he was scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor and 1/3 of his lung. The physician assured Marvin that he was cancer-free by the end of 2017.

During his monthly appointment, another tumor was discovered, but this time the cancer was more aggressive, which required him to undergo radiation and chemotherapy for nine weeks. Marvin began his cancer treatment on February 14, 2019, at Riverside Hospital. That is when the nurse navigator referred him to the Columbus Cancer Clinic.

CCC took Marvin by the hand and continued his cancer journey by his side. He received a Gift of Kindness to have his car repaired, was invited to participate in the Night of Hope and Support, and his was one of the families adopted for Christmas.

“This was one of the most wonderful times of my life,” he said of participating at Night of Hope, a fashion show and fundraiser for the Columbus Cancer Clinic. “Hearing the crowd cheer for me was like being on cloud nine. I have never been in a situation like that before in my life.”

Marvin said that the one thing he feels especially thankful for is the support system and the life-long friends he has made.

Columbus Cancer Clinic Surpasses 2,000 Mammograms in 2019!

As of December 2, 2019, at 9:30am, the Columbus Cancer Clinic provided 2,000 mammograms, surpassing all previously set records for the Clinic in mammography!

The Columbus Cancer Clinic is a Medicare and Medicaid certified clinic that provides cancer prevention and education through head-to-toe cancer screenings and breast imaging services that include screening/diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and breast biopsies. The program assists individuals in central Ohio through its outreach and education efforts. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of clients who visited last year had no insurance coverage. In 2018, the screening program 1,215 mammograms, diagnostic, and biopsies and provided 643 cancer screenings. Eighty-eight (88%) of clients are under the age of 50 while 97% are women and 3% are men.

The Columbus Cancer Clinic also provides a Home Care Support program to clients in active treatment for cancer who reside in Franklin County and live below 150% of the Federal Poverty guidelines. These services include assistance with medical supplies and equipment, medication, transportation to and from cancer-related medical appointments, groceries, wigs and breast prostheses, nutritonal supplements, and housing assitance in emergencies, often keeping clients out of homelessness. In 2018, the Home Care Support program served 747 clients. Seventy-three (73%) of clients are above age 50 while 55% are female and 45% are male. The Columbus Cancer Clinic began in 1921 and is the oldest freestanding cancer clinic in the United States. The Agency merged with LifeCare Alliance in 2005.

Thanks in large part to the funding the Columbus Cancer Clinic receives from Susan G. Komen Columbus, the clinic has the resources to help women navigate the often complicated system of care to access life-saving mammograms and early detection.

The Columbus Cancer Clinic stands apart from other community programs in its ability to eliminate the unique and varied barriers to breast health services faced by at-risk women during the continuum of care navigation. The ability to provide diagnostic on-site after receiving their screening mammogram is a tremendous barrier reduction because women do not have to be referred to another facility. Avoiding a referral to an outside location ensures women feel comfortable and have a positive experience during a time that be overwhelming.

Doing everything possible to remove the barriers women face, such as financial, linguistic, or transportation, the Columbus Cancer Clinic meets clients where they are. Clients also often face educational barriers about how to use newly obtained insurance coverage and how to navigate through the health care system. A quality navigation program like the Columbus Cancer Clinic has in place helps all patients have improved outcomes to reduce health disparities.

Happy National Nurses Week! LifeCare Alliance, originally called the Instructive District Nursing Association and founded in 1898, was the first Visiting Nurse agency in Ohio. Today, the Agency still has a mission to lead the community in identifying and delivering health and nutrition services to meet the community’s changing needs.

National Nurses Week is May 6^th-12^th annually, and is a time to recognize and support the nursing profession. We want to celebrate the nurses on staff who work hard daily to make sure the needs of our clients are met through the Columbus Cancer Clinic, Help-at-Home, and the Wellness department.

“As a child I never wanted to be a nurse. It just never crossed my mind until I saw a sign on the OSU campus my freshman year reminding students to get their nursing school application submitted. So I did and here I am. I was an attorney for a short time but I think God has a plan for each of us and it appears that I am chosen to be a nurse and I couldn’t be happier or more fulfilled.” Thelma has been a nurse for 35 years.

The Columbus Cancer Clinic, the oldest free cancer clinic in the United States, honored the contributions of some of its outstanding volunteers at the Volunteer Recognition event on Monday, April 16, 2018.

Each year, the Columbus Cancer Clinic Spirit Awards are presented to an individual or group who has given countless hours, support, and care for clients facing cancer. The awards are given in recognition of volunteer contributions during the previous year.

Columbus Cancer Clinic Volunteer Sue Gordon

Cancer Clinic Volunteer Recognized by Columbus CEO Magazine

One of the Columbus Cancer Clinic’s faithful volunteers, Sue Gordon, has been named Volunteer of the Year in Columbus CEO Magazine’s 2018 Healthcare Achievement Awards.

Sue has been volunteering with the Columbus Cancer Clinic for eight years. She is a two-time breast cancer survivor and has found a passion for serving others. Sue is thoughtful, passionate, and dedicated to “taking care of those no one pays any attention to,” embodying LifeCare Alliance’s and The Columbus Cancer Clinic’s founder, Catherine Nelson Black’s, original mission.

The Columbus Cancer Clinic began in 1921 and is the nation’s oldest free cancer clinic, where high-quality cancer prevention, early detection, home care, and emotional support services are offered to families in central Ohio. CCC was founded by Catherine Nelson Black in 1921, and has been a part of LifeCare Alliance since 2005. Without the help of volunteers like Sue Gordon, the Columbus Cancer Clinic would not be able to help as many area residents in need.

Sue has taken on many duties during her experience at CCC, including front desk work, weighing patients, taking blood pressures, and listening to patients concerns who are going through cancer testing. In addition to the volunteer services she provides, Sue also is involved with the Grossman Ray Group, adopts a family during the holidays, and raises money and other donations for the clinic.

As LifeCare Alliance’s CEO Chuck Gehring explains it, “I don’t know how you replace people like Sue. She is a crusader for this stuff and has been wonderful and helped out clients I know independently over the years.”

It is unmistakable that Sue Gordon cares deeply about the clients she works with, and has a true gift of Nourishing the Human Spirit.

The Legacy Endowment Campaign is designed to meet existing and future needs of LifeCare Alliance for decades to come.

An anonymous donor has generously committed to matching the first $5 million in Endowment gifts, beginning in 2018. The donation comes during a momentous occasion for LifeCare Alliance as the Agency celebrates its 120th anniversary.

This Campaign creates an opportunity for individuals and families impacted by the work of LifeCare Alliance to express their stewardship and leave their legacies in concrete and meaningful ways.
