Building Your Legacy

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

August is Make-a-Will Month, serving as a great reminder to update your current will or take the first step towards writing one. While making your will, you can easily include an estate gift to a nonprofit organization, such as LifeCare Alliance. Plus, if you decide to include LifeCare Alliance in your estate plans at the $25,000 or above level, you’ll be recognized in the Catherine Nelson Black Society.

Below are six different ways you can give an estate gift to a nonprofit and the benefits associated with it. You should always talk to your financial planner and tax advisor before making any decisions.

  1. Bequests Through Wills: One of the simplest ways to make a planned gift is by including a nonprofit organization in your will. You can specify a certain amount or a percentage of your estate to be donated to the organization upon your passing. This allows you to support their mission while ensuring your assets are used according to your wishes.
  2. Charitable Gift Annuities: A charitable gift annuity involves donating assets to a nonprofit in exchange for a guaranteed income stream for yourself or a loved one for a specified period. Afterward, the remaining amount goes to the nonprofit. This can provide you with tax benefits and a steady income during your lifetime.
  3. Charitable Remainder Trusts: A charitable remainder trust allows you to place assets into a trust that provides income to you or your beneficiaries for a set number of years or life. Afterward, the remaining assets are distributed to the nonprofit organization. This method can offer tax advantages and flexibility in estate planning.
  4. Life Insurance Policies: You can name a nonprofit organization as a life insurance policy beneficiary. This allows you to make a substantial gift without significantly affecting your current financial situation. You can either donate a policy you no longer need or purchase a new policy specifically for this purpose.
  5. Retirement Plan Assets: Naming a nonprofit organization as a beneficiary of your retirement accounts, such as an IRA or 401(k), can be a tax-efficient way to make a charitable gift. Retirement plan assets donated to nonprofits are typically not subject to income or estate taxes, making them a valuable option for planned giving.
  6. Real Estate or Tangible Personal Property: Donating real estate, artwork, collectibles, or other valuable assets to a nonprofit organization can be another way to make a significant impact. These donations can often provide tax benefits while supporting the nonprofit’s mission.

When considering making a planned gift to a nonprofit, it’s essential to consult with financial and legal advisors to understand the implications and ensure your wishes are accurately reflected in your estate planning documents. By planning your charitable giving strategically, you can create a lasting legacy that supports causes you are passionate about for generations to come.

Transforming Intentions into Impact: Join the 1898 Society Today

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

Most of us want to give back, yet finding the time and method to do so effectively can be a challenge. For many of us, good intentions often fall by the wayside without a structured approach.

“I used to be quite passive about giving back—whether through reviews, donations, or volunteering. I needed structure to follow through. If it’s scheduled into my routine (a monthly Meals-on-Wheels route), deducted automatically (1898 Society), or asked directly (this email), count me in. It’s about turning good intentions into meaningful action,” shared one of our dedicated donors, Molly.

This sentiment resonates deeply with the ethos of the 1898 Society, where small actions lead to significant impacts. Named in honor of the year our organization was founded, the 1898 Society is designed for individuals who, like Molly, seek to make a consistent and lasting difference.

Joining the 1898 Society means more than just setting up automated donations—it signifies a commitment to turning your philanthropic aspirations into tangible support for our mission. By contributing regularly, you support our vital work in helping to restore the stability and self-reliance of our clients who face challenges stemming from medical conditions, disabilities, and aging in place.

Molly’s story is a testament to the transformative power of structured giving. By automating her contributions, she’s seamlessly integrated philanthropy into their routine, ensuring ongoing support without the hassle. This decision has not only simplified her giving process but also magnified its impact.

As we navigate the challenges of our times, the need for reliable support has never been greater. By becoming a member of the 1898 Society, you join a community of like-minded individuals committed to effecting positive change. Together, we can amplify our collective impact and make a difference where it matters most.

Take the next step today to increase your impact by joining the 1898 Society. Let’s turn intentions into action and create a brighter future for all.

A suggested introductory gift of $18.98 (or more) per month would help deliver meals and regular wellness checks to an older adult for six weeks! Your contribution will truly serve as a testament of how much Being There Matters™.

Celebrating Impact: Camp Hamwi Red Carpet Day

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

On July 30, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Red Carpet Day at Camp Hamwi. This day brought supporters, camp staff, and campers together for a day filled with connection and fun. Camp Hamwi is a summer camp for children and teenagers living with diabetes. Campers have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in an environment where they feel empowered in their diabetes management while enjoying a camp experience and making lifelong friends.

Camp Hamwi’s Red Carpet Day was an opportunity for donors and supporters to see firsthand the impact their support helps sustain. With their contributions, Camp Hamwi is able to grow and improve each year, making more opportunities and activities available for campers to enjoy. Last year, with the help and generosity of Camp Hamwi supporters, we were able to purchase CampViews, an electronic medical record system that monitors glucose levels. With the monitoring of both CampViews and the camp staff, parents can have peace of mind while their child is away at camp.

During Red Carpet Day, our guests gathered to enjoy lunch alongside the campers. They witnessed the comradery among campers and participated in the camp cheers. After lunch, our guests received an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the campgrounds, seeing everything that Camp Hamwi has to offer – including the horses! We all left camp feeling inspired by the positive impact Camp Hamwi has on the hundreds of youths who gathered for a week of connection, joy, and fun!

If you are interested in learning more about Camp Hamwi and next year’s Red Carpet Day, please contact Danielle Visconti at dvisconti@lifecarealliance.org.

How to Celebrate the Nonprofit Sector on Labor Day

By August 2024 Newsletter, eNewsletter, Featured News

An older man bringing food to a table at a Labor Day cook out

This Labor Day, we invite you to celebrate an essential sector of the American workforce: nonprofits. Here are a few statistics about the industry in Ohio.

  • Nonprofits employ more than 12% of Ohio workers.
  • There are nearly 60,000 nonprofits.
  • The nonprofit sector generates over $103.2 billion in annual revenue for the state.
  • Yearly volunteer service work is worth an estimated $6.7 billion.
  • 3,052,430 volunteers contribute 278 million hours of service a year.
  • 33.2% of Ohioans volunteer.

As we can see by these stats, the nonprofit sector and the volunteers that help support it truly contribute towards a thriving economy in Ohio. We at LifeCare Alliance are thankful for all our volunteers, associates, and supporters. Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to continue providing our vital services to more than 20,000 Central Ohioans a year. And for that, we thank you.

In honor of Labor Day and in celebration of the nonprofit industry, here are a few things you can do:

  • Celebrate with community—Invite friends and neighbors to your holiday barbecue and check on the older adults in your life. Fighting loneliness in our communities is an easy way to support many nonprofits’ missions.
  • Host a drive—Work together with friends and family to gather supplies and donations for the nonprofit of your choosing. At LifeCare Alliance, we are currently accepting fans, cancer pantry items, and durable medical equipment. You can view our Amazon wish list here.
  • Volunteer—Seek out local volunteer opportunities. LifeCare Alliance offers hot meal routes in five counties across Central Ohio. Sign up to volunteer Labor Day weekend at the links below:
