Started in 1994, Project OpenHand Columbus was founded with the dedicated goal of meeting the nutritional needs of men, women and children living with HIV or AIDS in central Ohio. POHC has helped more than 500 people living with AIDS to lead a more independent and healthier life than otherwise possible. In May 2005, LifeCare Alliance partnered with POHC in order to provide Meals-on-Wheels to their clients after they faced some financial hardships and were in need of outside assistance. POHC relies heavily on volunteers in all aspects of its operation: food pantry support, meal delivery, educational counseling, fundraising, and administrative assistance. Dining center volunteers are a unique group of individuals that enjoy the company of older adults. The dining centers provide Meals-on-Wheels to a diverse group of older adults in a congregate and social setting. This allows participants to enjoy peer support and receive some health and social services in a stimulating and supportive environment. Volunteers assist with serving meals, set-up and clean-up of the dining areas, socializing with the dining center participants, coordinating activities, and greeting and registering participants.
